Jim was born to Levi and Mattie Armstrong on December 23, 1933.
Jim attended school in Midlothian, TX, graduating with the class of 1951. After graduating from high school worked for the FBI as a Security Clerk for 2 years before joining the U.S. Army in 1953. Jim served in the Army for 2 years stateside before being deployed to Korea where he spent 1-1/2 years and retired with the rank of Sargent.
On June 1, 1957 he married Launa Christine Cox at the Hi-View Ranch near Midlothian, They spent 41 happy years together.
In 1959 he graduated from Abilene Christian College with a degree in Secondary Education; later receiving his Master Degree in Secondary Education from the University of North Texas in 1964.
Jim’s passion for teaching and coaching would continue for the next 35 years with positions in Dallas, TX, Tewksbury, MA, Tyler TX and Van TX. Serving in Churches as a Deacon, and Bible school teacher for many years.
Upon retirement Jim spent his time playing golf, traveling, gardening, and serving in various capacities throughout the community.
He was preceded in death by his parents Levi and Mattie Armstrong, wife Launa, infant daughter Jana Armstrong and ten siblings.
Jim is survived by his Son and daughter-in-law: Von and Stacy Armstrong; daughters and sons-in-law, Julie and Tony Morrison; and Joni and Greg Prinz. Grandsons, Andrew Morrison and wife Hayley, Taylor Armstrong, Morgan Collins and husband Carson, Mitchell Armstrong, Miranda Waller and husband Dylan and Carson Prinz. Jim has one precious great-granddaughter, Ava Waller.
Pallbearers are Andrew Morrison, Taylor Armstrong, Mitchell Armstrong, Greg Prinz, Carson Prinz, Carson Collins and John Waddill. Honorary pallbearers are Ted Posey, Jesse Tomasek and Dick Blume.
A celebration of Jim’s life will be at 11:00am Friday April 14, 2023 at West Erwin Church of Christ with visitation at 10:00am. Burial will be in Tyler Memorial Park, Tyler, TX.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Van ISD Education Foundation or to a charity of your choice.
