| Home Page | There are 12-18 species of Hylocereus in Central America and Mexico, and H. undatus widely used as garden plant in the tropical world. It is actually considered invasive in a number of ecosystems. Hylocereus are generally large climbers reaching 30 feet high in trees (9 m). They can also be epiphytic.
Some Hylocereus have huge flowers, up to 12 inches across (30 cm) that open at night and are pollinated by bats. Most species have white flowers, but Hylocereus stenopterus has red flowers.
