LARIMER COUNTY — A Laporte man has been charged after authorities say he posed as a deputy and tried to lure kids into his truck.

Michael Don Ashcraft, 41, was originally arrested Friday on traffic charges.

He now faces three counts of criminal attempt of second-degree kidnapping and two counts of impersonating a peace officer. He had already been charged with harassment, disorderly conduct, failure to appear on an assault warrant and drunken driving.

Ashcraft is being held at the Larimer County Detention Center on $75,000 bail.

Ashcraft is accused of approaching five children in an alley Friday and trying to lure them in his truck by threatening to take them to jail.

He also is suspected of posing as a deputy and trying to lure a 13-year-old girl into a pickup a few days earlier. When she told him “no,” the girl ran to a nearby convenience store.
