Embryo differentiated from food reserve (poorly developed); well developed; 1 per seed; partially filling testa (with food reserve); at one end of seed not extending into a depression or cup; without coleoptile; without coleorhiza; without simmondsin; without stomata; not green.

Distribution

New World. Middle America (Chiapas, Mexico).

Notes

Do achenes (if that is the fruit type) fall individually or does the head fall intact? We are not sure how Spjut would classify this fruit - our scoring is an achene, but may be an achenerium Martinez & Ramos (1989): "Fruit aggregates with many achenes. … Achenes …slightly spongy".

We advise against extracting comparative information from the descriptions. This is much more easily achieved using the DELTA data files or the interactive key, which allows access to the character list, illustrations, full and partial descriptions, diagnostic descriptions, differences and similarities between taxa, lists of taxa exhibiting or lacking specified attributes, and distributions of character states within any set of taxa.
