Portuguese Sheepdog

Portuguese breed, native from Alentejo.

Like the rest of Europe, where there is a grazing culture, a remarkable breed of herd management has also developed in Portugal. Of exceptional intelligence, the Portuguese sheepdog is probably the most versatile of all herding dogs. From sheep, goats, horses, cattle, pigs, shepherds everything, even geese, ducks and chickens.

There are widespread comments, from those who know The Breed well, that on family outings, the feeling is that the Portuguese sheepdog even people "graze". In fact, its functional character is so refined and developed, that its incessant excursion around family groups, or friends, attracts attention. The feeling is that the dog shows an enormous concern to keep together any group of which it is part or is inserted. It assumes guardian and protective behavior quickly and without being told.

Also noteworthy is his dedication to the owner. Dog of a single owner, he is the one who chooses to owe obedience. It would be more correct to say, he is accountable, because it is this feeling that emerges, when, after another incessant carousel of control and verification, he approaches the owner as if to ask: - Anything else? It's all right? There is nothing to say, as he can read the look of approval. With such attitudes, reprobation has neither space nor place.

Another characteristic that distinguishes it from the others is its ability to act in autonomy. After learning, which you do easily and quickly, you no longer need to control or guide, you do it alone, and you learn alone, in a crescendo of learning that has no end and that leads you to the perfection of the act. Similar breeds, of equal intelligence, and of equal efficiency and effectiveness, usually need constant order and guidance to get the job done.

The Portuhuese sheepdog waives the order. Just need the opportunity. Demonstrating that are the best is something that is just natural to him.
