Marking the centenary: Lachy Hulme and Anthony Hayes join stars of Channel Nine's Gallipoli for preview screening that depicts troops going into battle in 1915

The script had been three years in the making, but the cast of upcoming Gallipoli finally got an exclusive preview screening of the mini-series on Monday night in Melbourne.

The show will mark the centenary of the ANZAC landings at the breaking dawn on the beaches of the Gallipoli peninsula in Turkey and the troops going into battle on April 25, 1915.

Logie award winning actor and star of Offspring and Howzat! Kerry Packer’s War, Lachy Hulme, plays Lord Kitchener and didn't miss a chance to catch his appearance alongside the cast.

The cast also includes Harry Greenwood, former Home And Away star Lincoln Lewis, Puberty Blues' Ashleigh Cummings, upcoming young star Kodi Smit-McPhee and Underbelly's Matt Nable.

The storyline begins as ANZAC troops go into battle on the beaches of the Gallipoli peninsula.

Among them is 17-year-old Thomas 'Tolly' Johnson, played by Smit-McPhee, who lies about his age to enlist in the Great War with his brother Bevan.

Tolly, Bevan and his friends finds themselves admist the chaos and key battles that's to be endured for the next eight months on the peninsula whilst learning lessons of survival.

Smit-McPhee, also 17, was first noticed for his AFI award-winning role co-starring with Eric Bana in Romulus, My Father in 2007, but his breakthrough role was in The Road in 2009 alongside Viggo Mortensen.

Kokoda's Greenwood will play brother Bevan and Home and Away's Lewis will also star as one of his mates in the series.

Higher up the ranks will be Nable as Sergeant Harry Perceval, as well as Underbelly's Jeremy Lindsay Taylor, Hulme of Puberty Blues' and Cummings on the homefront.

The epic series is an adaptation from the best-selling book by Les Carlyon and will be screened over eight hours.
