This must surely be one of our most charming wild flowers and, although fortunately still not uncommon, there can be few amongst us who do not get a feeling of delight when coming across it at the edge of a meadow or along a hedgerow. Flowering from spring into autumn, it is very variable and is found in three-colour combinations in shades of yellow and blue-violet, usually with very pretty markings. In a world full of modern cultivated forms, one tends to forget the unassuming yet surely still unsurpassable beauty of the original wild flower. 4ins (10cm)

Delighted with violas. Amazing easy to germinate and I have a blanket of them under my peach tree. So delicate and always commented on in my garden.

    Germination Instructions

Spring sow for flowers the same year. Autumn sow for flowers the following year. Autumn sow under glass. Fill a pot with 90% moist compost 10% sand. Sow 5mm deep and cover lightly with soil. Ideal temp. 15-20°C. Spring sowing as above. Germination takes 2-4 weeks approx. When seedlings have 2 true leaves transplant to 8cm pots. Acclimatise and plant out after danger of frost has passed.

    Growing Instructions

Prefers a humus-rich, moist but well-drained soil in full or partial sun. Water well until established. Violas are cool weather plants, they thrive in full sun due to the light offered rather than the heat given. High temperatures can be offset with regular watering and a mulch to prevent the tubers from drying out. Requires little attention.

    Cultivation Instructions

Remove spent flowers to encourage further blooms. Will self-seed.
