Brooklyn Bridge is a suspension bridge that crosses the East River between Manhattan and Brooklyn in New York. There was long talk of building a bridge over the East river. The only way to get across the strait was by boat. In 1855, engineer John Augustus Roebling proposed a suspension bridge over the strait and in 1869 he was chosen to design the bridge. The bridge opened in 1883 after 14 years of construction, many died during the construction of the bridge, including John Augustus Roebling.
Brooklyn Bridge is one of the first modern suspension bridges and was the first bridge to use steel cables in its construction. Brooklyn Bridge is 1825 meters long and the main span is 486 meters. The bridge was the world's largest suspension bridge until the Williamsburg Bridge opened in 1903. Brooklyn Bridge is a famous landmark in New York and one of the most famous bridges in the world.
