Pleuropetalum darwinii is a small, bushy species with small branches that are initially red when young and become brown with age. This species belongs to the Amaranth family, which includes about 2000 species.
The flowers are yellowy-red and are borne together in clusters. The fruits contain very small, shiny black seeds from which the Spanish name perlas negras or ‘black pearls’ originate.
