WELT Artist's Edition: DIE WELT meets Anselm Kiefer

The fourteenth WELT artist's edition is published today, 13 October 2023 / German-Austrian artist Anselm Kiefer shows previously unknown side of his work

Anselm Kiefer, one of the most important artists of our time, is transforming the daily newspaper DIE WELT into a work of art in watercolor: Kiefer, who was born in Donaueschingen in 1945 and became an Austrian citizen in 2018, has designed what is now the fourteenth WELT artist’s edition together with the editorial team. It is available today, Friday, 13 October 2023, in stores and as a digital edition.

Kiefer, who ist best known for his gigantic formats and archaic materials such as lead, ash, and straw, presents a previously unknown side of his work in the artist’s edition. Fine watercolors, laid over drawings on plaster paper, punctuate the pages of today’s issue in predominant shades of blue.

Jennifer Wilton, Editor-in-Chief of DIE WELT: “As a medium for daily debate , DIE WELT is a forum for the new: for news and surprising perspectives, but also for new ways of looking at what is already known. For this reason, too, we are delighted that Anselm Kiefer is presenting a different side of his work in DIE WELT. This year’s artist’s edition will also undoubtedly become a coveted collector’s item.”

Cornelius Tittel, Creative Director WELT and Editor-in-Chief of the art magazine BLAU INTERNATIONAL: “With Anselm Kiefer, one of the most powerful artists of our time is designing the fourteenth artist issue of DIE WELT. His formats are gigantic, his ambition unprecedented. And it is the very big themes that have occupied him since his beginnings in the early 1970s. From the abysses of German history to the eternal questions of philosophy, from Paul Celan’s Death Fugue to the origins of the universe, Kiefer succeeds like no other contemporary artist in creating images of meaning that transcend space and time. This has made him the most important mythologist and poet in recent art history.”

The first WELT artist’s edition was created in 2010 in collaboration with the painter and sculptor Georg Baselitz. It was followed by artist’s editions by and with Ellsworth Kelly (2011), Gerhard Richter (2012), Neo Rauch (2013), Cindy Sherman (2014), Julian Schnabel (2015), Isa Genzken (2016), Jeff Koons (2017), Christopher Wool (2018), Takashi Murakami (2019), Katharina Grosse (2020), David Hockney (2021) and Daniel Richter (2022). The series is curated by Cornelius Tittel.

The fourteenth issue of DIE WELT artist’s edition is available in stores and here.
