When a 5-year-old boy went missing in the Oregon woods this week, his Australian shepherd, Rue Bear, came to the rescue.

Salix Heisinger was reported missing at around 7:10 p.m. Tuesday after he hadn’t been found for around an hour, according to the Washington County Sheriff’s Office. As they searched for him, the family realized the dog was missing too.

“I was pretty scared,” said Heisinger, who suffers from asthma, of the ordeal, according to KGW. However, Rue was by his side as they sat in some brush and waited for help.

“It was a very helpless time to feel like I couldn’t go out and find him,” said Katrina Dallas, Salix’s mother.

By 11:39 p.m. Tuesday, authorities found Salix and Rue, both uninjured. They were able to find the pair because they heard Rue’s barking.

“When he got back and was sitting in the back of the ambulance, that dog was right there,” Dallas said.

According to the American Kennel Club, Australian shepherds are lean, tough ranch dogs known as cowboys’ herding dog of choice. They have also been used as recuse dogs, aides to police and as service dogs.
