Flowers:
White (Abundant, beautiful, white flowers (0.5" wide) in 3-12-flowered corymbs in spring)
Foliage:
Green (Gray to blue-green foliage in summer; generally has no fall color, although occassionally yellow)
Fruit:
Red (Fruits (1/3") are bright red in late summer and persist through mid-fall, somewhat hidden by foliage yet still showy)
Soil:
Prefers a well-drained and moist site (avoid standing water), but is relatively adaptable
Diagnostic Characteristics:
Leaves are alternate, entire, broad-ovate, 1-2" long, dull to only slightly glossy bluish-green above. Abaxial leaf surfaces are tomentose when emerging, but become glabrous. Buds are extremely small (0.125"), imbricate, and brownish-gray, with outer scales opening to reveal a slightly pubescent interior. Stems are purple when young, becoming reddish-green then light gray with maturity. Younger growth may be pubescent at the apex, while the older stems are glabrous and display an "onion-skin" effect.
