JY,
I'm currently working on a trio courtesy of Au. An extra male will be of no use I think. Perhaps you can keep it? BTW, I've noticed, a male need another female in order to display its full glory . Other wise you can't see the full blue ring.
Look at what I brought home today from Ronnie's house. Its a young male Simpsonichthys costai. I initially thought it was a young female but was proven wrong.
I know the pic isn't very good but its a skittish fella and is being housed with a trio of Fundulosoma thierryi in a plastic tank.
Gan (turaco), I'm babysitting the male for you in the time being. Let me know when you want it.
By the way, the white specks are actually daphnia.
I'll post up a clearer picture if it decides to stay in one place soon.

Gan, is that a trio or reversed trio? It doesn't do JY any good to hold onto the male and if you collect it, that'd make 2 pairs or extra full gloryOriginally Posted by turaco
Had I known earlier that you didn't want it, I would have him join Nemo, then you can make a movie call, "Finding Costai"
I'm back & keeping 'em fingers wet,

In that case I make an appeal here :
Does anyone have an extra female available?

Ron,
Initially I thought what you have is a female, that I want . If 2 males means I'll form 2 pairs means I'll get lesser eggs per pair. A trio will have better returns I think.. Does it work this way?
A threesomes means a female must wait for the male right?
So I think two pairs will be better. You might get more eggs.

The male has settled in nicely and is a greedy little fella. He was practically gorging on daphnia together with his thierryi tankmates.
He doesn't show the colour much since the tank does not have a dark background, but I believe they like a shaded tank with a black background.
The patterns in his fins boggled me since this population does not seem to have that many spots in the dorsal and anal fins, going by what I've seen on the web so far.
History of this population:
Collected by Didier Pillet and his Brazilian friend, Juliano, in a pond close to the town of Formoso do Araguaia, state of Tocantins, Brazil. Date of collection was in February, 2003.
Specimens of this species and Maratecoara lacortei were brought home by Didier and were subsequently bred and distributed into the hobby.

Another image of the same male. He's not that shy for this species. Pretty much loves to be out in the open although he scoots away once he sees the camera.
By the way, the image was taken through a very badly scratched plastic tank. Pardon the quality.
The male's roughly 2 cm now. I'm not sure at which size he'll be mature at but I sure need a female for him soon.

JY,
Here's my male. Not too showy though.
He looks grumpy though.
Very large and very nice.

And here's the girl that made my male turn all black all of a sudden.
She was given to me by Au to be paired up with the male. A little larger than the male but they're showing signs of spawning. Have yet to see them dive into the mini peat-bowl I gave them though probably they might have undergone the spawning dives.
