Environment: Freshwater

Origin: They come from Lake Tanganyika and live on the shell bottom of the lake.

Temperament: They are a Cichlid, but can be kept with other shell-dweller species if the tank size is right.

Company: Multifasciatus like to be in groups of 6+ with at least a 1m/2f ratio. If provided with big enough shells, and right water conditions, they will breed and breed, to keep the colony going.

Water Parameters: pH 8.0+, temperature 23-27 ° C / 75-80 ° F

Aquarium Setup: The aquarium is different then most setups. There should be shells, with a whole big enough to fit a 2" fish and facing upward. There should also be a sand bottom. Alkaline water is a must.

Feeding: Multifasciatus like pretty much everything you give them. They prefer meaty foods. Worms and brine are fine for them. Give them a varied diet.

Breeding: Like said above, the key is finding the right shells for them and they will lay the eggs inside the shells. Suitable shells can be bought in your local fish store.
