Halloween H20 was released twenty years after the original movie and saw the first of what has become multiple returns to the franchise for Jamie Lee Curtis reprising her role as Laurie Strode. It is revealed that she faked her death (really the only tie-in to Halloween 4-6, otherwise it ignored the prior sequels aside from Halloween II) and is now working as the headmistress at an elite private school. She has a son played by Josh Hartnett who chafes under her strict rules meant to keep him safe from the ever-present threat of Michael Myers finding them and finishing what he started. Of course, Michael manages to track her down and the usual terror ensues.

The movie is good overall but does have some silly points (pretty much everything with LL Cool J). I like that they changed the character of Laurie from being the scared weakling to being willing to stand up to Michael. This time, when she drops a weapon she picks up another one and does not assume he is dead. It sports a very recognizable cast (especially back in 1998) including Adam Arkin, Michelle Williams, Jodi Lyn O'Keefe, and Joseph Gordon Levitt. It also had a pretty nice nod to the late Donald Pleasance and had a cameo by Nancy Stephens reprising her role as Marion Chambers, the nurse from the first two movies. There was also a fun cameo by Janet Leigh, who was of course Jamie Lee Curtis' mother and the original scream queen from the movie Psycho.

For those who get the original DVD version, the extras a pretty minimal. There is a short behind-the-scenes feature, a music video, and a trivia game. The extras released with the complete Blu-Ray set are much better and more extensive.

Of course, there have been other sequels after this one, including basically resetting the franchise with Curtis returning as a slightly different version of Laurie. Had this actually been the end of the Halloween franchise, as I think a lot of people would have liked, it would have been the perfect conclusion to the story. But, now, you really just have to look at it as one of the sequels and enjoy it (or not) for the story it tells. I think the original movie is one of the best, if not the best, horror movies ever, and while this is not as good as that, it is still very good and one of the best sequels that have been made. Definitely worth watching.

Halloween H20: Twenty Years Later (1998), an American slasher horror film that is the direct sequel to Halloween (1978) and Halloween II (1981), disregarding all other Halloween movies. Set in 1998, the movie opens with Michael still around, tracking down the whereabouts of his sister, Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis). Venturing to Langdon, Illinois to find out where she is (to kill her of course), Michael finds she is not there and goes on a road trip. Laurie it turns out is now Keri Tate and is a teacher and a headmistress at an exclusive, gated coed private school, Hillcrest Academy, in the cozy mountain town of Summer Glen, California. Though haunted by PTSD and flashbacks of Michael’s murderous rampage, she has a nice life for herself, a good job, a good son who just turned 17 (John Tate, played by Josh Harnett), and even a romantic interest (Will Brennan, a teacher at the school, played by Adam Arkin).

Michael makes his way to Hilcrest Academy, finds his way in, and proceeds to kill again, with not only Laurie/Keri, John, and Will in danger, but the security guard (Ronny Jones, played by LL Cool J), and three of John’s friends, two girls and one boy, the four students staying behind from a school trip to Yosemite National Park, two of them known to Keri and Will, two not known, including Keri’s son John.

I liked the updated late 1990s vibe, good production values, it had a _Scream_ and _I Know What You Did Last Summer_ feel to it (and there is a shoutout to _Scream_ in the movie). It feels fairly short and I think it is the shortest Halloween movie. Not rushed, but it does feel a bit short. A lot of the movie is set up for the murderous rampage, established how Michael finds Hillcrest and gets in, Laurie’s and John’s lives, how the school gets practically emptied out to just four students and three adults, with the meat and potatoes as it were about the last 30 minutes of the movie or so (though there the opening scenes is murderous). Once it gets going, it is classic Halloween, with Terminator-like Michael who just keeps going and Laurie fighting back, even going hunting Michael. Some nice nods to other horror and science fiction classics and the movie seems to hold true to the lore of the first two Halloween movies. My only complaint is the movie goes in for a lot of fake jump scares, a whole bunch of them, of scare turning out to be nothing at all and not immediately followed by real danger. Good casting and acting and I don't think a whole of lot of people doing dumb things as is common in slasher movies.

Okay so the Halloween movies have never been known for being rich with plot, story or character development. We all know the drill - Mikey wants to kill his family, blah blah blah. But re-watching this movie made me realize how genuinely GOOD this movie is. Laurie (sorry sorry...KERI) is dealing with raising a son who's never had to deal with his insane demonically driven uncle and just wants to be a kid. She's dealing with that, the trauma of her past, and survivor's guilt. She has very real emotions and reactions to things.

All that said? Classic slasher blunders. Ladies might LOVE Cool J - but not when he leaves the freaking gates open and subsequently gets people murdered.

Is this the BEST Halloween movie? No. But it's better than 6 - you know, the one with the immortal and age defying actor Paul Rudd.

This is not a sequel or a remake it's a complete new take, on Halloween it picks up 20 Years Later after The First Halloween in 1978. it tells the story of Laurie and dealing with what happened 20 years ago, and how Michael been after her all these years,
I don't know why people call it a remake cuz its NOT
