About this item
- One (1) starter-size plant with a 4-inch-diameter root ball. The plant will be a minimum of about 6 to 8 inches tall and not have bloom on arrival. Guaranteed to arrive in healthy condition. No extended long term warranty.
- Calotropis Gigantea or Giant Milkweed is an interesting unusual plant with many unique features. It is fast growing, salt tolerant, soft wooded, evergreen or semi-decidous tree like shrub that produces clusters of distinctive crowned five-petaled waxy flowers in multiple shade of lavender and purple.
- It grows moderately fast and matures as a large, upright tree like shrub. It typically forms multiple stems but can be trained as single trunk small tree if desired. The attractive gnarly grey trunks are clad in uniquely shaped silver colored foliage. Mature size ranges from about 8 to 10 feet within the recommended Zone Range, depending on climate and care. It can be grown as a large outdoor garden potted plant
- The flowers are nectar rich and attractive and provide a food source for a wide variety of adult pollinators. Although caterpillars will feed on the foliage at times, it is not a preferred host and adults will usually deposit eggs on other more tasty hosts if available.
- Giant Milkweed is a tropical plant and is recommended USDA Zone Range 10, 11. It grows well in Zone 9, but must be protected from cold temperatures. Cold protection is recommended in all Zones for the best appearance, earliest bloom and longest life. It is a prized favorite for many northen gardeners, but typically requires special environmental accommodations to survie the winter indoors.
- Product is live plant sold for ornamental use only. Not subject to California Proposition 65 Warning Label Requirements. Incidental components such as potting media and packaging are labeled on the package as may be required when sent to California.
- Safety: Ornamental plants should be kept out of reach of pets and children.
- Location Restrictions: None known

About Us
Here at Emerald Goddess Gardens, we strive to provide stellar products and growing tips that reflect our home-grown values. As a third generation female owned and operated small business, family is one of the most important parts of what we do. We are proud to have held on to many of the forgotten histories of the heirloom plants we grow today. Some might say the green thumb gene runs in our family, but we like to think our success comes from the decades worth of hands-on experience that we share with each other and with every order that leaves our nursery.
We can't do it all by ourselves though, so we continually aim to provide a flexible environment that works for our diverse female majority team. The hands that carefully select plants for our orders are an essential part of the family that our matriarch has grown to include women from varied economic, social, and cultural backgrounds.
Some of our most prized plants are those that are hard to find or no longer exist in nature. Maintaining stock on endangered and rare species allows us to increase accessibility for all while ultimately contributing to conservation efforts through commercial reproduction. Native species diversity and protection is very important to us. We take steps to ensure we never unknowingly transport invasive insects or plant pathogens and as such are qualified to ship plants to all 50 states year-round.
The Emerald Goddess Gardens family grows every day as we establish and maintain relationships with our customers nationwide.
Welcome to the family, let's get growing!
Giant Milkweed
Calotropis gigantea (formerly Asclepias) or Giant Milkweed is native to Asia. It has become naturalized in many other locations, including Western, Central and South America, the Caribbean, Brazil and Australia.
It's natural habitat is usually along roadsides, and on previously developed lots and acreage. The plant is a fast growing, soft wooded, evergreen or semi-deciduous tree-like shrub with soft, large oval shaped gray green leaves with an odd heart shaped base and hairy underside.
The trunk is covered with a thick, corky, white to gray, furrowed, gnarly bark and frequently grows at odd twisted angles as if pushed by the wind, or other unseen force. It will grow in a wide range of soil types, is very drought tolerant once well established and also tolerant of salt spray.
Giant Milkweed is frequently found growing wild in dry coastal environments. It is a lowland plant that does not typically grow at elevations above about 1000 feet. The Giant Milkweed produces clusters of waxy, five petaled flowers in multi-toned purples, lavender and white. The flowers are frequently used for tassels and leis.
The flowers attracts several species of butterflies, such Tiger Butterflies (Danaus chrysippus), Monarchs (Danaus plexippus), and others. Monarchs are believed to have the ability to utilize compounds from the flowers as a defense. A fibrous non edible fruit like seed pod follows the flower.

ButterfliesForm meets function throughout the garden and pollinator attraction is no exception to this rule. Butterflies require a 'landing pad' to rest on while they feed, so larger flowers and those that appear in tight clusters make for the best feeding sites. With a shorter proboscis than other pollinators, butterflies will prefer flowers with a shorter pistil. Butterfly specific flowers include:
|
HummingbirdsHummingbirds typically feed while using their wings to hover near flowers. They will not require a wide landing surface like butterflies which enables them to access smaller singular flowers. The long, slender beak that hummingbirds use to collect nectar allows them to feed from longer tubular flowers. Hummingbird specific flowers include:
|
Other PollinatorsBees, moths, and many other insects have developed unique adaptations to collect nectar from flowers. Luna Moths, for example, are known for their exceptionally long proboscis that they use to feed from exceptionally large flowers such as those produced by Brugmansias. Bees, much like butterflies, will prefer flowers that provide a landing pad, but their smaller agile bodies offer the ability to climb deep inside a flower's pistil. Here they often become covered in pollen, which lends to their reputation as the world's most efficient pollinators. |
4 inch Starter Size Plants
Our starter size plants are always shipped rooted and growing in 4 inch diameter pots. These small plants are perfect for repotting into a larger pot and watching as they grow to maturity. We do not recommend planting 4 inch starters directly into the ground until they have grown larger and more mature.
We have decades of experience sending live plants across the country and do several things to keep your plants happy as they make their way to your front doorstep. Our plants are preventatively treated for insects before they begin their journey. Then, they are thoroughly watered and provided an adequate water supply for their trip. Finally, they are wrapped in paper to protect from transpiration stress and carefully placed in their box before being picked up for transport.

Our Promise to You
While we have perfected the art of sending plants across the country over decades, there is always a chance that something can go wrong during the transportation process. We are ready to jump into action in the rare event that there is an issue with your order. So that we can understand your situation comprehensively and find a resolution promptly, we ask that you provide photos of the damaged plant, the box it arrived in with the label visible, and a brief description of the issue within 24 hours of receipt.
Some minor damage during shipping is sometimes an unavoidable part of the process, and is not considered to be a defect. Carriers can sometimes handle packages roughly and a shipment can be damaged during the trip. Some minor issues are normal, temporary. cosmetic and not considered to a defect in the product, so please note:
- A few branches may break. It's OK. They will grow back.
- Some leaves may turn yellow and fall off. It's OK. They will grow back.
- A few spots may appear on the leaves. It's OK, the plants were treated regularly and immediately before shipping to protect against pest and disease, so light and fresh air will cure the problem
We promise that our plants will arrive as described and in good, viable condition. Because plants are perishable, living things, and there are many factors that determine whether live plants ultimately grow and thrive in their new environments that are out of our control, we are not able to promise the survival or growth of plants after they are delivered and planted.
