Product Description

After his parents' death, fish counter Axel Backmar (Johnny Depp) travels to Arizona for the wedding of his car dealer uncle, Leo Sweetie (Jerry Lewis). Feeling responsible for Axel, Leo offers to take him into the family business. While working at the car showroom, Axel meets older woman Elaine (Faye Dunaway) and her stepdaughter, Grace (Lili Taylor). Axel alienates his uncle by beginning an affair with Elaine, who is obsessed with building a functioning aircraft, and he also becomes caught up in the deteriorating relationship between her and Grace.

Emir Kusturica's only film in English, and it is a great one. He has done quite a few wonderful, imaginative, colorful Eastern European sagas, and he has done a marvelous translation into English -- with a unique story, great characters, writing, and casting. One of Johnny Depp's early roles, and just as quirky as anything he has ever done. He plays an independent young man working as a New York City fish inspector, when he is visited by his cousin, wonderfully played by Vincent Gallo, who matches him quirk for quirk. Their banter is pure delight and it sounds like Mr. Kusturica had the wisdom to let them just go for it, after he had shown his genius in casting them. Enter Jerry Lewis who runs Arizona's biggest Cadillac dealership, and wants the boys to go into the business with him. Now enter the fabulous Faye Dunaway, stepmother to Lili Taylor who is suicidal and cynical. The four are remarkable and entertaining. Jerry Lewis is touching and funny.

I won't even go into the story as it is too crazy to summarize. Just sit back and enjoy the ride: the humor, the costumes, the performances, the wit, the tears -- and the gorgeous Cadlllacs. It is worth the price of admission just to see these vintage classics.

The picture is spectacular in this early HD release.

Arizona Dream has to be my favorite "odd little movie that could". The first time I watched it, I became more than just a fan of Johnny. I became a lover of his courage while choosing projects. He typically does not make his decisions based on the amount of money he could earn. He waits for a script to speak to him, and picks from the heart. Though one could never be 100% sure of everything this quirky movie is trying to say... It obviously has a great deal of heart, and an over abundance of deliciously strange!

We got this movie because my wife is a Depp fan (okay, I am too). It's a strange movie... the characters are very odd... but it's great fun to watch. Jerry Lewis was hilarious, Faye Dunaway was amazing... and oh yeah, Johnny Depp was great, as usual. The story hangs together well, in spite of the "Wonderland"-esque happenings. But what's with that fish...?

Not a kid-friendly movie, but for grown-ups who like strangeness, it's worth seeing.

I saw Arizona Dream about ten years ago and it left a strange and intense impression on me. When I saw it on amazon, I decided to buy it so I could see it again. I was not disppointed. It's messed up and absolutely superb. The writing and the acting are flawless. You will never forget the scene at the dinner table.

One thing was disappointing, though: some scenes were cut from the original version, so the transitions don't always seem to work. I get that it's a surrealist movie, but still.
