Maguey, scientifically named Agave americana, is a perennial plant indigenous to regions in Mexico, South Africa, and Australia. It belongs to the genus Agave, and its species are known for having edible flowers, stalks, and sap, in addition to thick and succulent foliage similar to aloe vera. The plant grows to 6 feet high and 6 feet wide. Its flowering stalk grows in the center of the plant up to 20 feet high. This plant is recognized for its medicinal and commercial value, especially in Mexico where it was first discovered during the Aztec period. The maguey is known by other names, such as century plant and American aloe. I thankfully only ordered one before making a larger order. The plant arrived in a 3M bubble wrap mailer envelope - no kidding. The poor plant was squished, split, and mangled - the root ball was even sticking out of the package. If this thing survives it will be a miracle.
