Dry (mostly) Cycads at UC Berkeley.
Lots of E.horridas..more then you will see together in a lifetime. Why? because any confiscated poached Cycads at SFO are then given to the UCB. A huge haul was made about 12 years ago. It netted a jail term for the President of the Cycad society. He hard a hard time convincing the judge he didn't know what they were
I'm willing to bet all I have though- UCB was pleasantly surprised to see those Encephalartos species do so well without a single 100f or even 90f day in the summer is possible. 80's are not that common.
One side fact- They had a HUGE Cycas thoursii in the tropical greenhouse for decades. It was by far largest in the state. The trunk was the diameter of a telephone pole. Now,its gone. Maybe I missed it planted out? Or is there a story to that? Oh well.
And I will need help on ID.sorry.

Here are some more Cycads in that garden... first one above is a Dioon, not a Cycas. A lot of their collection is made up of confiscated plants... some are so incredibly old I have not seen any plants aside from theirs that even approach that size (see below in the Parazamia Macrozamias)

The Macrozamia concinas, glaucophyllas and polymorphas are among the larges I have every seen of these species- even those with these plants in their collections for over 40 years generally do not have plants this size.. definitely smuggled in. Great looking plants, too.

Re: Dry (mostly) Cycads at UC Berkeley.
Either E. horridus..but outside chance a E.trispinosus is in there? I ask since I still can't tell them apart. Cycad experts know them like the back of their hand. I probably took a label photo...and it came out too blurry for me to see. So that's why no ID.

Oh yeah, side by side its clear. Thanks.
All I have is my blue E. lehmannii and it didnt grow a single frond this cool summer after 2 last year when it was a seedling from ebay. Next year should be a good flush since the fronds on it still look perfect. Plenty of energy built up.
