In the present work, for the first time, the chemical components of essential oils (EOs) and extracts from wood branch (WB) resulted from the tree pruning wastes of Schinus molle L. grown in Egypt were evaluated for their antioxidant and antibacterial activities. EOs, methanol (ME), dichloromethane (DCME) and water (WE) extracts as antioxidant and antibacterial activities were measured. Total phenolic and flavonoid contents as well as analysis of extracts by gas chromatography-mass spec-trometry (GC-MS) were reported. The major components in EOs were a-elemol, b-pinene, and a-phellandrene, in ME were 6-(4-chlorophenyl)-3-cyano-4-(N-benzylpiper-azino)-2H-pyran-2-one, and 2-naphthalene methanol, dec-ahydro-a,a,4a-trimethyl-8-methylene, in DCME were 12-methyl-E,E-3,13-octadecadien-1-ol, and 1,2-ben-zenedicarboxylic acid, dioctyl ester, and in WE were b-eudesmol, and (Z,Z,Z)-9,12,15-octadecatrienoic acid, 2,3-dihydroxypropyl ester. The highest total antioxidant activity was found with EOs (90 ± 1.23 %) and WE (86.30 ± 1.40 %). The lowest IC 50 values of 13.11 ± 3.00, and 12.66 ± 2.15 lg/mL were found with WE and EOs, respectively. EOs and WE were observed to have good antibacterial activity against Bacillus subtilis, Bacillus cereus, Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Sarcina lutea, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Micrococcus luteus. In conclusion, the Schinus molle L. WB EOs and extracts might, indeed, be used as a potential source for pharmaceutical or food industries.

Chemical composition, Fatty acids profile and Biological properties of Thymus capitatus (L.) Hoffmanns, essential OilT. capitatus is widely used in traditional medicine in Tunisia. The main goal of this study was to evaluate the phytochemical composition, the fatty acids profile, the antioxidant, antibacterial, and antifungal activities as well as the cytotoxic potential of the essential oil (EO) of this plant. The identification and the quantification of the different constituents of the tested EO was determined by gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Antioxidant activities were evaluated by spectrophotometric methods and chemical tests. HCT 116 cells were used to evaluate the cytotoxic effect of the EO. The microdilution method was conducted to evaluate the antibacterial activity. The essential oils of the fresh rhizomes; flowers; and leaves of Zingiber kerrii Craib were investigated using different extraction techniques; including solid-phase microextraction (SPME), hydrodistillation (HD), and organic solvent (OS), and characterized by gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC–MS). A total of 37 SPME; 19 HD; and 36 OS compounds were identified from the rhizome extract of Z. kerrii; with the major components being α-pinene; β-pinene; and terpinen-4-ol; respectively. From the flower extract; 16 SPME; 2 HD; and 10 OS compounds were identified; (E)-caryophyllene was found as a major compound by these techniques. The leaf extract exhibited 20 SPME; 13 HD; and 14 OS compounds; with α-pinene; (E)-caryophyllene; and n-hexadecanoic acid being the major compounds; respectively. Seasonal Variation in Volatile Oil, Polyphenol Content and Antioxidant Activity in Extract of Laurus nobilis Grown in IranThe leaves of Laurus nobilis were collected in the middle of four seasons (spring, summer, autumn, and winter) to determine the best harvesting time for obtaining the highest oil yield, 1,8-cineole and polyphenol content and antioxidant activity. After drying the plant materials in shade, their EOs (essential oils) were obtained by hydro-distillation method. Analysis of variance showed harvesting time had significant effect on the oil yields of L. nobilis. Seventy one components were identified in the oils of L. nobilis with 1, 8-cineole (5.7%--terpinyl acetate (3.2%-13.1%), sabinene (2.3%-12.0%), beta-elemene (0.2%-17.7%) and (E)-caryophyllene (0.2%-16.9%) as the main constituents in different seasons. The predominant phenolic constituents in L. nobilis were cinnamic acid, carvacrol, quercetin and coumarin, respectively. Gallic acid, catechin, caffeic acid, chloregenic acid, p-Comaric acid and rutin were not detected in any seasons. The best antioxidant activity was in spring (268.6 µg/mL) and the lowest one was in winter (702.1 µg/mL).

Chemical Composition and Cytotoxic and Antioxidant Activities of Satureja montana L. Essential Oil and Its Antibacterial Potential against Salmonella Spp. Strains2013 •
The present study describes chemical composition as well as cytotoxic, antioxidant, and antimicrobial activities of winter savorySatureja montanaL. essential oil (EO). The plant was collected from south France mountain, and its EO was extracted by hydrodistillation (HD) and analysed by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS). Thirty-two compounds were identified accounting for 99.85% of the total oil, where oxygenated monoterpenes constituted the main chemical class (59.11%).
