Systematics of the genus Isatis (Brassicaceae) is difficult and controversial, and previous studies were based solely on morphological characters. Sequence variation of the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) regions and the 5.8S gene of nuclear ribosomal DNA (nrDNA) were analyzed using parsimony and Bayesian methods. Twenty-eight taxa of Isatis and related genera of the tribe Isatideae were sampled, including 20 Isatis species representing almost all major morphological lineages, all three species of Pachypterygium, two of nine species of Sameraria, and monospecific Boreava, Myagrum, and Tauscheria. Two well-supported clades were resolved in the ITS tree, and they demonstrate the artificiality of the present delimitation of the tribe. One clade includes I. emarginata, I. minima, I. trachycarpa, P. brevipes, P. multicaule, P. stocksii, and T. lasiocarpa. The second clade includes I. buschiana, the polymorphic I. cappadocica with five subspecies, I. gaubae, I. kotschyana, I. leuconeura, I. pachycarpa, I. takhtajanii, I. tinctoria, and S. armena. Pachypterygium is polyphyletic and, together with Boreava, Sameraria, and Tauscheria, all are nested within Isatis. This study is a continuation of our recent systematic survey based on seed-coat microsculpturing (Moazzeni et al., 2007. Flora 202, 447–454) and reveals that fruit characters mapped onto the molecular tree show considerable convergence. The reliance on fruit characters alone in the delimitation of genera may well lead to erroneous phylogenetic results and thus to incorrect taxonomic conclusions.
The genus Bupleurum L, with about 185–195 species, is the second largest genus of the family Apiaceae Lindl. It has 35 species in the Iranian plateau, of which 15 are thrived in Iran and three of them, B. wolffianum, B. flexile and B. ghahremanii, are endemic species of to Iran. In this study, the fruit anatomy of all Bupleurum species in Iran, except B. wolffianum due to lack of available specimens, were studied for the first time. Some of the most taxonomically important fruit characteristics are as follows: mericarp shape in transverse section, characteristic of ribs, ratio of mericarp width to thickness, existence of oil ducts, quantity of vallecular and commissural vittae, ratio of height to width of dorsal rib, and shape of endocarp in transverse section. Important characters for each species are described and an identification key is provided to portray the similarities and relationships between the species. Anatomical studies also confirmed the anatomical and morphological differences between Sect. Perfoliata and other members of the genus. Absence of vittae in Sect. perfoliata may be correlated with broad leaves and dilated, rounded and perfoliate leaf bases. Furthermore, two distinct subgroups were shown due to different number of vallecular vittae in each furrow, which may be applied as a basic classification factor for further investigations on the genus Bupleurum.

MORPHO -ANATOMICAL STUDY OF LEAF AND STEM OF SAPINDUS TRIFOLIATUS L., AS A TAXONOMICAL IDENTIFICATION TOOL2020 •
Sapindus trifoliatus is distribution throughout all districts in Kerala, in its wild and cultivated habitat. The presence of high saponin in the pericarp attributed the genus as an important ingredient in our traditional medicine. The human-mediated deforestation, contemporaneous natural calamities, through flood and land sliding; all that happened in the last few years in the state has adversely affected many plant species. The identification and its conservation is the need of time. Here, anatomy turns out to be the good option when flowers or fruits are unavailable for identification. The main intention of this work is to use leaf and stem anatomical characteristics as the device for the identification of species. The microanatomy (Scanning Electron Microscopy) of leaf showed ranunculaceous stomata and glandular and non-glandular trichomes on the abaxial side. The micromorphology showed the eucamptodromous type of ramification. The anatomy of the petiole showed the distribution of prismatic crystals in the ground tissue. In stem, the presence of simple perforation plate, confluent axial parenchyma, septate and non-septate fibers with simple pits in the xylem components are the stable anatomical features, to establish the taxonomic identity of the species, and are the stable characteristics even in the climate change which alter the morphological characteristics. This is the first of its kind detailed report on the anatomy and micromorphology of S.trifoliatus from Kerala. Further, in the future, more descriptive and comparative anatomical studies are recommended for the taxonomical identification of plant species in its natural habitat.

Significance of Fruit and Seed Coat Morphology in Taxonomy and Identification for Some Species of Brassicaceae2018 •

STUDY OF MEMBERS OF DIFFERENT TRIBES OF FAMILY ASTERACEAE WITH REFERENCE TO STEM ANATOMY2020 •
Asteraceae is one of the widest family in Angiosperms having significant economic values, such as production of oil, ornamental plant, secondary metabolites, etc. In family Asteraceae about 1,535 genera distributed in 13 tribes. The current work aims at studying the differences in stem anatomy and floral characters of these tribes. In the present study sixteen species belonging to ten tribes were documented, The Heliantheae, one of the tribes' in this family is more dominant in Nagpur region, and in the present study six genera were recorded. This was followed by two genera in Cichorieae, and one genus each in the tribes Anthemideae, Astereae, Echinopeae, Eupatorieae, Gnaphalieae, Inuleae, Mutisieae and Vernonieae. Detailed study of the arrangement of vascular bundles and type of trichomes found on the stem was studied using free hand-sections. For the floral characters, ray floret, disk floret, shape of receptacle and the type of capitulum inflorescence was studied. An attempt was made for the development of a taxonomical key based on stem anatomical features highlighting the differences in the tribes. Microphotography of the floral components and anatomical study of the stem of these plants, revealed characters which are uutilized for creating a key for various tribes based on morphology as well as anatomical characters.

Seed-coat microsculpturing and its systematic application in Isatis (Brassicaceae) and allied genera in Iran2007 •
Aim: To assist as a relevant source of information and contribute towards the standards to dispose the quality and identity of the studied plants to avoid adulterations. Morpho-anatomical characters of seven plants from the sub class (Asteridae) Solanum dubium, Datura innoxia and Datura stramonium family (Solanaceae), Solenostemma argel, Calotropis procera, Leptadenia arborea family (Asclepiadaceae) and Convolvulus arvensis family (Convolvolaceae) were studied. Radar shape for morphological leaf characters (leaf length, leaf width, leaf apex angle and leaf base angle) was used. Standard method of double staining technique used for anatomical studies. The results shown in tables and plates. The leaves of the plants from the same family have the same radar structure which mean that these plants are similar in their leaf morphology. Two stomatal types were distinguished anomocytic type in S. dubium, S. argel, C. procera and L. arborea while the anisocytic type was found in the two Datura species and C. arvensis. Trichomes were classified into Stellate non-glandular and Simple non-glandular. Mesophyll typed into two features, isobilateral in S. dubium, S. argel and C. arvensis, dorsiventral in the rest. The vascular bundles were bicollateral crescent-shaped in all species studied while it was collateral in C. arvensis only. This study suggested that the observed morph anatomical characters are of great value in quality control and formulation development of the plant studied.
