Lectotypifications in Nephelium L. and Xerospermum Blume
(Sapindaceae)

Summary. Eleven synonyms for five Nephelium species: N. cuspidatum Blume, N. hypoleucum Kurz, N. juglandifolium
Blume, N. lappaceum L. and N. melanomiscum Radlk. and 11 synonyms of Xerospermum noronhianum (Blume) Blume
are discussed and typified.

Introduction
The genera Nephelium L. and Xerospermum Blume have
generally been placed in Sapindaceae tribe
Nephelieae (Radlkofer 1931), although AcevedoRodriguez et al. (2011) treated them as genera of
uncertain position. The former genus comprises 22
species distributed from Assam, Yunnan, Hainan to
Southeast Asia (Leenhouts 1986), whereas only two
species were recognised for the latter, occurring from
Bangladesh, Assam, Myanmar, Indo-China and the
Malay Peninsula, to Sumatra, Java and Borneo
(Leenhouts 1983). Nephelium is extremely difficult to
identify based on sterile parts or flowers. Fruits and
vegetative parts are important for species delimitation
(Welzen 1999) but it rather resembles Mischocarpus
Blume and Xerospermum in overall morphology, which
can easily cause mis-identification (Leenhouts 1983).
Revisions of Nephelium, Xerospermum and the wider
Sapindaceae in Malesia have been undertaken
(Leenhouts 1983, 1986; Adema et al. 1994) but the
typification of several accepted names and synonyms
remained unclear. Therefore, the present study aims
to lectotypify names as required by the International
Code for Nomenclature (ICN), especially Articles 9.5,
9.11, 9.12 and 9.17 (McNeill et al. 2012).
Materials and methods
Type specimens of Nephelium cuspidatum Blume,
N. hypoleucum Kurz, N. juglandifolium Blume,
N. lappaceum L., N. melanomiscum Radlk., Xerospermum
noronhianum (Blume) Blume and associated synonyms,
deposited in herbaria at A, BM, C, CAL, FI, G, K, L, M,
NY, P, SING, U and US, were examined. Nearly all
type specimens housed at BM, K and SING and
specimen images from A, BM, FI, G, K, L, M, NY, P,
U and US were seen. Those not seen are indicated by
‘n.v.’. For taxa from Myanmar and the Malay Peninsu-
la, many collections were deposited in CAL, especially
those made by King, Kurz, etc. We requested all
appropriate material, namely of N. dasyneurum Radlk.,
N. longana (Lam.) Cambess. var. hypoleuca (Kurz) King,
Cupania glabrata Kurz, Xerospermum echinulatum Radlk.,
X. intermedium Radlk. and X. wallichii King. However,
only the type of X. echinulatum was located.

Radlkofer (1913) also described Nephelium robustum
based on Elmer 12934 but without any herbarium cited.
Duplicates were distributed to several herbaria. We
select the specimen at M (M0224990) as the lectotype
because it is a good specimen and also conforms to
the description by Radlkofer.
NOTES. Blume (1847) described Nephelium cuspidatum
Nephelium hypoleucum Kurz (1871: 50). Nephelium
longana (Lam.) Cambess. var. hypoleuca (Kurz) King
(1896: 435). Type: Burma, Martaban, Jan. 1862, fl.,
Brandis 691 (lectotype K! [K000701844], selected by

Nephelium cochinchinense Pierre (1895: text with pl.

without any specimens or herbarium location cited in
the protologue. Leenhouts (1986) cited Korthals’
specimens as an undefined type although ‘holotype’
was written by Leenhouts on one of the sheets
(L0014463). However, all four sheets are still effectively syntypes and the name needs lectotypification.
Korthals s.n. L0014463 is designated here as the
lectotype because it is the best preserved.
Nephelium ophiodes was first described by Radlkofer
(1879b) without any specimens and herbarium cited
but Leenhouts (1986) verified Maingay 543 as
Radlkofer’s type for the species. He cited the specimen
at B as the holotype without seeing the specimens and
the specimen at K was cited as an isotype by him.
Nevertheless, the specimen at B should be the
lectoype (designated by Leenhouts (1986)) but we
agree that the specimen at B may have been destroyed
and the remaining extant specimen is at K. Therefore,
we select the specimen at K (K000701872) as the
lectotype according to Article 9.11 of the ICN
(McNeill et al. 2012).
Pierre (1894) described Nephelium bassacense, including a line drawing in the protologue but without any type
specimen cited. However, Leenhouts (1986) cited
Harmand 1427 at P (P02297355) as the holotype (also
labelled on the sheet), with isotypes at K and M. This can
be treated as effective lectotypification by Leenhouts.
Radlkofer (1907) noted the collection Forbes 2842 at
‘Hb. Berol.’ from Sumatra in the protologue of
Nephelium dasyneurum. However, Leenhouts (1986)
cited Forbes 2842 (CAL) as the holotype but the
specimen had not been seen. We requested to see it
from CAL and found that it does not exist there.
According to the protologue, we conclude that the
holotype should be in B but may be lost or destroyed.
Following Article 9.12 of ICN (McNeill et al. 2012), we
select the specimen at FI (FI008670), one of the
isotypes verified by Leenhouts (1986), as the lectotype
because it is a perfect specimen and congruent with
the protologue.
Radlkofer (1907) investigated and described specimens of Goodenough 1304 and 1782 and Maingay 450
collected from Malacca for Nephelium obliquinerve. All
specimens are syntypes and lectotypification is required according to Article 9.11 of the ICN (McNeill
et al. 2012). We found that the specimen of Goodenough
1304 at SING has leaves and fruits which are in good
condition and we select this specimen as the lectotype.

NOTES. Kurz (1871) cited a Brandis specimen from
Burma in the protologue of Nephelium hypoleucum
without citing a herbarium location. The type is not
in CAL and we assume that it was deposited
elsewhere. Leenhouts (1986) verified Brandis 691 at
K as the original material with a duplicate at M.
Therefore, the lectotype was automatically selected
by Leenhouts (1986).
Nephelium cochinchinense was first described by Pierre
(1895) based on a gathering of several specimens
under Pierre 875. He noted the localities as ‘Habite
toute la Basse Cochinchine ct le Cambodge’ in the
protologue but without a collection date. Specimens
under this number were collected at different times
and localities between January 1865 and February
1872 in Cambodia and Vietnam. Therefore, the name
needs to be lectotypified using one of these specimens. We select Pierre 875 (P02297360), collected from
Bien Hua, Vietnam in April 1865, as the lectotype
because it agrees well with the protologue and has
fruits which are very useful for identification.

Vietnam, and Poilane 11697 (K000701755, P06667907),
11961 (K000701754, P06667912), 12089 (K000701753,
P06667937) from Laos are mentioned in the original
description of Xerospermum laoticum by Gagnepain
(1947). However, this taxon was placed in synonymy
under N. hypoleucum by Leenhouts (1986). All specimens comprise labels with handwriting which we
assume to be that of Gagnepain. Poilane 12089
(P06667937) is selected as the lectotype because it is
one of Poilane’s specimens collected from Laos and

has vegetative parts with fruits which are important
characteristics for species diagnosis.
Nephelium juglandifolium Blume (1847: 106). Type:
Indonesia, West Java, Anon. s.n. (lectotype L!
[L0037673], selected here; isolectotypes K!

Nephelium altissimum Teijsm. & Binn. (Teijsman &

N. tuberculatum Radlk. (Radlkofer 1907: 352). Type:
Malaya, Perak, Scortechini 1767 (lectotype M!

NOTES. Nephelium juglandifolium was first described by
Blume (1847) but without specimens cited in the
protologue. Leenhouts (1986) cited specimen ‘L sh.
no. 908.270-181’ (L0037673) as the holotype. Therefore, the specimen is accepted as the lectotype
designated by Leenhouts (1986).
Two syntypes of Nephelium tuberculatum from Perak,
Malaysia, King's collector 7903 (ex eodem Hb. Comm.)
and Scortechini 1767 (ex Hb. Calcutt. comm. c. Hb.
Monac.) were cited by Radlkofer (1907) in the
protologue. The former collection is deposited at M
and the latter is found at K and M, whereas no specimen
is available at CAL. We select Scortechini 1767 (M0224979)
as the lectotype because it is a good specimen and
associated with the workplace of Radlkofer.

NOTES. The first-step neotypification of Nephelium
lappaceum was carried out by Leenhouts (1986), who
cited the collection in L made from a tree in bed III.
H. 10 at Bogor Botanic Garden, as the neotype.
However, it appears that several collections were made
from the same tree by different collectors (Anon. s.n.
(M0224977), Carocci-Buzi 190 (L0014479), Nedi 12
(L0014475, L0014476, L0014477, L0014478) and
Sutrisno 71 (BISH1004941, BISH1004942, L0014480,
L0014481), all of which were cited by Leenhouts
(1986). Therefore, we select Sutrisno 71 at L
(L0014480), one of the best specimens among those
collections, for a second-step neotypification according to Article 9.17 of the ICN (McNeill et al. 2012).
The type of Euphoria glabra was not cited in the
protologue but Leenhouts (1986) cited two specimens
of an anonymous collector at L as syntypes. We choose
one of these (L0014473) as the lectotype because it is a
perfect specimen and congruent with the protologue.
Ridley described Nephelium obovatum based on
Haviland 2275 with male flowers collected from
Borneo (Sarawak), but no herbarium was cited in the
protologue. The name does not have a holotype
although Leenhouts (1986) mentioned Haviland
2275 at K (K000701776) as the holotype. We conclude
that the type at K should not be a holotype but a
lectotype which was automatically selected by
Leenhouts (1986).
Nephelium melanomiscum Radlk. (Radlkofer 1879b:
112). Type: Malaysia, Sarawak, Beccari 39l8 (lectotype
FI! [FI007858], selected by Leenhouts (1986);

Nephelium xerospermoides Radlk. (Radlkofer 1913: 1608).
Type: Philippines, Mindanao, Distr. of Davao,
Todaya, Mt Apo, Sibulan R., Elmer 11205 (lectotype

NOTES . Radlkofer (1879b) described Nephelium
melanomiscum without citation of a herbarium specimen. Leenhouts cited only a specimen at FI as the

type but we found duplicates at K, L and P. We accept
the specimen at FI to be the lectotype selected by
Leenhouts (1986).
Raldkofer (1913) referred to two collections collected
from Mindanao, Elmer 11205 and Klemme 15215, in the
protologue of N. xerospermoides. Because the name has no
holotype and needs lectotypification, we select the Elmer
11205 (M0224974) as the lectotype because it is in good
condition and congruent with the protologue.

NOTES. Kurz (1872) described Cupania glabrata based
on his own collections from Pegu and Martaban.
However, he did not cite the herbarium in which the
type was located. Leenhouts (1983) cited Kurz 2058,
collected from Pegu, in K and M as isotypes only. We
assumed that the holotype was deposited at CAL but
we were unable to locate it. Therefore, we select the
specimen Kurz 2058 (K) as the lectotype because it is a
perfect and well-preserved specimen.
Radlkofer (1879a) first described Xerospermum
lanceolatum but did not cite any specimens. In a later
description (Radlkofer 1932) cited Beccari 1031 at ‘Hb.
Florent., Vindob. and Monac.’. Beccari’s specimens
should be syntypes although Leenhouts (1983) cited
the specimen at FI as an undefined type. Nevertheless,
the specimen at FI should be cited as the lectotype
because we conclude that the lectotypification was
already made automatically by Leenhouts (1983).
Radlkofer (1879a) described Xerospermum muricatum but
without a specimen cited in the protologue. Leenhouts
(1983) referred to Griffith KD 1004 (M0224902) as the
holotype which should be cited as the lectotype. According
to his choice of specimen for the holotype, this counts as an
effective lectotypification by him.
Pierre (1894) described and cited specimen ‘Hb.
Pierre no. 2067’ collected from Phu Quoc, Vietnam
for Xerospermum microcarpum but we have seen two

sheets of this collection at P; therefore, we select P
(P02297331) as the lectotype.
Xerospermum microcarpum var. elliptica was first
described by Pierre (1894) based on Pierre 714
and 4119 from Cambodia and Southern Vietnam. It
was later accepted as var. ellipticum by Leenhouts
(1983). Thirty syntype sheets of Pierre 714 and 4119
were collected at various times and localities and
deposited in many herbaria. In addition, the
unambiguous labels of Pierre 714 and 4119 were
presented in several specimens because both numbers were usually written on the same label. We
studied the protologue for the correct collector
number and best specimen for lectotypification.
Accordingly, we select Pierre 4119 (P02297329)
which was collected from Phu Quoc, Vietnam in
Feb. 1874 as the lectotype for the variety, because it
is a clearly numbered and perfect specimen.
Duplicate specimens are deposited in K.
King (1896) described Xerospermum wallichii and cited
several syntypes collected from Singapore and Penang,
Perak and Pahang. Leenhouts (1983) designated King's
collector 8725 (CAL) as lectotype (not seen). However, we
assume that there is no type collection at CAL although
the collection is present at BM and K. Therefore, we
select King's collector 872 (K000701796) as the lectotype
because it is a perfect specimen.
Radlkofer (1907) cited two collections in the
protologue of Xerospermum echinulatum, namely King's
collector 8637 and Scortechini 2104, both from the Malay
Peninsula and deposited at ‘Hb. DC.’. Duplicates of
King's collector 8637 are in BM, CAL, K and L and
Scortechini 2104 in K, L and P. We select King's collector
8637 at G-DC (G00006111) as the lectotype because it
is a good specimen.
Xerospermum intermedium was first described by
Radlkofer (1907) based on four collections, namely, Curtis
3436, Helfer KD 1005, Helfer KD 1006 and Kehding 90. Helfer
KD 1005 (K000701838) is selected here as the lectotype
because it is a better specimen in good condition.
Radlkofer (1907) described Xerospermum brachyphyllum
and cited Forbes 452 at Hb. DC. as the type. We also found
duplicates in BM, BO and L. Therefore, we select the
specimen at G-DC (G00006109) as the lectotype.
Radlkofer (1910) cited Balansa 3419 from Tonkin
and deposited at ‘Hb. Berol. and Hb. Boiss’, in the
original description of Xerospermum tonkinense. We
have not seen the material in B which may have
been destroyed during World War II. Leenhouts
(1983) referred to Balansa 3419 (G) as the holotype
with isotypes at K and P. We assume that the
lectotype was already designated at G by Leenhouts.
However, we found that the specimen of Balansa
3419 comprises two sheets at G-BOIS. Following
Article 9.17 of the ICN (McNeill et al. 2012), we
select the specimen at G-BIOS (G00006123) as a
second-step lectotypification.

Several type collections of Xerospermum
testudineum were collected from Sumatra and Java
and cultivated in the Bogor Botanic Gardens as
cited by Radlkofer (1922), namely, Forbes 1216a
(from Java meridionali-orientalis), Jelinek s.n.
(from Java) and Teysmann s.n. (from Bogor Bot.
Gard. III. 1.28, origin from Priaman; from Bogor
Bot. Gard. III. H. 17, origin from Lampongs).
Teysmann s.n. (M0224914) is selected here as the
lectotype because it is the better specimen in
having flowers, a clear label and a good distribution of duplicates in several other herbaria.
Xerospermum xanthophyllum was first described by
Radlkofer (1925), who cited specimens from plants
cultivated in Bogor Botanic Gardens (Culta in Hort.
Bogoriensi, n. III, i, 50a) and kept at Hb. Monac. We
select Anon. 11 (M0224919) as the lectotype because it is
a perfect specimen and congruent with the protologue.
Gagnepain (1947) noted several collections
made by Poilane in the protologue of Xerospermum
donnaiense as the types, without indication of the
herbarium. Specimens are present in BM and P. All
were collected over a short period of time between
February and March 1935 from the same locality in
Vietnam. Poilane 24122, 24472 and 24489 have
vegetative parts and inflorescences whereas Poilane
24682 also has fruits. The latter is selected as the
lectotype because it is a good and clear specimen
which may be helpful for species identification.
Xerospermum poilanei was named for Poilane by
Gagnepain (1947) based on two of Poilane’s collections, without indication of the herbarium. We select
Poilane 1770 at P (P02297333) as the lectotype because
it is in good condition.
