Artist Frida Kahlo broke ground for women and the Latine community with her many portraits and works inspired by Mexico and her Mexican heritage.
Kahlo’s work explored identity, postcolonialism, gender, class and race in Mexican society. Her work has been described as surrealism and magical realism.
In 1938, Kahlo held her first solo exhibition in New York at the Julien Levy Gallery, followed by a Paris exhibition in 1939. She made history after the Louvre purchased her painting “The Frame,” making her the first Mexican artist featured in the museum.
Here, WWD looks back at Kahlo’s fashion through the years.
