Richea scoparia. This Tasmanian alpine Ericaceae bush relies on a skink (Niveoscincus microlepidotus) for pollination, despite the skink is not its pollinator. In order to protect the flowers from the harsh alpine conditions, its petals fused to form a structure called calyptra, which stops insects from entering the flowers. But the skink loves the nectar, and it removes the calyptra by eating it to reach the nectar, thus opening the flowers for the pollinators. Fascinating coevolution.
Foxtails (Andersonia caerulea), an Ericaceae shrub from SW Western Australia. It may be small (0.05-1m), but the amount of flower it can produce seems unlimited.
South African plant: Plukenet’s heath (Erica plukenetii). Relatively easy to identify, as it has rosemary-like foliage and far-exserted stamens.
The fairy lantern (Corybas barbarae) is a small terrestrial orchid endemic to eastern QLD and NSW (north of Sydney). The hairy labellum is covered by a large, curved, and inflated dorsal sepal. The linear lateral sepals are tiny (2mm), and the minute petals (1mm) are hidden by the labellum. It is believed that fungus gnats are its pollinators. Apart from that, little is known about its reproduction and dispersal mechanism.
