Gahnia microstachya

Tufted perennial. Culms slender, 20–45 cm high, 1–2 mm wide. Leaf-blades filiform and channelled or flat, erect, scabrous, about as long as culm; ligules narrow-chartaceous with upper margin erose or minutely hairy; sheaths red-brown to very dark brown, dull. Inflorescence slender, erect, 20–60 cm long, with c. 8 nodes. Spikelets 2-flowered; glumes 6–9, similar in size, long-mucronate, red-brown to dark grey-brown, scabrous at least on midrib; stamens 3 or 4; anthers c. 1.3 mm long excluding appendage 0.2 mm long. Nut oblong to narrow-ellipsoid, trigonous, granulate, glistening, 1.5–2.5 mm long, 0.8–1.0 mm diam., dark grey-brown. Flowers spring–summer.
