Stoloniferous herb, 2-14 cm, with thick rootstock, fibrous roots and a collar of fibrous petiolar remains. Leaves ± rosette-forming, narrow oblong-elliptic, 1.5-13 x 0.5-11-3 cm, glabrous, sessile or with short flattened petiole, margins entire or subcrenate; leaves on stolons small, alternate. Inflorescence an ovate-oblong, many-flowered spike, elongating in fruit. Bracts 10-14 mm, enfolding calyces. Pedicels 1-1.5 mm. Calyx 3-4 mm; lobes c. 2 mm. Corolla bluish-purple to mauvish-pink, 8-12 mm; tube 5-7 mm; upper lip entire or emarginate; lower lip with two oblong obtuse lobes, 2.5-4 mm, equalling upper. Fruit with a ± woody exocarp, 7.5x6 mm, ovate-oblong, obtuse. Fl. 4-6. Short turf, heavy clay, subalpine pastures, field-sides, 1300-2300 m.
