Louis Vuitton Purse Birthday Cake

One of the first cakes we ever made was a Michael Kors-inspired purse cake for Christine’s aunt. Although it was about two years ago, it remains one of our personal favorites from our repertoire, mostly because of the fun chocolate work (handles, hardware and custom iPhone).

Last weekend, we made our second purse-shaped cake, this time an exact replica of a gorgeous Louis Vuitton bag. Our friend Lauren (whose bridal shower cake we made back in June) was organizing a party for her mom’s 60th birthday, and thought it would be extra special and fun to have a cake designed like one of her mom’s favorite purses.

One of the birthday girl’s daughters shared this awesome side-by-side on Instagram!

The cake itself, which was a delicious devil’s food cake with peanut butter buttercream filling, was fairly easy to stack and shape. The challenge was figuring out how to get that signature LV pattern. Christine printed out the logo on 8″ x 11″ cardstock and painstakingly cut out each design to create a stencil. Then, we used Wilton’s gold food color spray to transfer the pattern onto the fondant. We also used the gold spray for the purse hardware, and piped the chain with gold decorating gel.

We absolutely loved making this cake and can’t wait to do more of them. So if you (or a loved one) have a favorite bag that you want transformed into a cake, let us know! 🙂
