Perilla is a widely used tree in the traditional medicine of Vietnam and many countries worldwide. The seeds of P. Frutescens are used to produce perilla oil, an aromatic and precious oil. The fresh tree of P. Frutescens is also a spiced vegetable used in Dong A cuisine.
In addition, the P. Frutescens tree is widely used in traditional medicine to cure many diseases. According to Eastern medicine, perilla is warm, spicy, non-toxic, and has antibacterial, inflammatory, pain, and antifungal effects. Perilla treats welding, headache, cough, bloating, fish poisoning, crabs, and many other diseases. Many studies have also shown that perilla can help support the digestive and immune systems and enhance overall health.
The studies of perilla’s plant and pharmacological chemicals have been widely performed. The compounds have been isolated and determined include flavonoids, volatile oils, fatty acids, terpen tri, phenolic compounds and other compounds. The functions of these compounds include anti -allergy, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, anti-cancer, antibacterial, antidepressant and many other effects.
- One of the important effects of perilla is to regulate airway mucus in the treatment of respiratory infections. Airway mucus plays a defensive role against invasive bacteria, toxic chemicals and diverse environmental particles. However, the abnormalities of the quality or quantity of the airway mucus can cause a change in airway physiology and weaken the body’s defense ability, often leading to serious airway diseases as such as Chronic bronchitis, cystic fibrosis, asthma, and bronchiectasis. The effect of regulating perilla mucus helps treat and prevent these diseases.
- Perilla is also known for its anti -allergy and anti-inflammatory effects. Compounds derived from perilla such as Rosemarie acid and flavonoids help relieve pain, swelling, and inflammation in the body. This effect is very useful in the treatment of respiratory, dermatological, stomach and intestinal diseases.
- Perilla has an anti -allergy effect, helps reduce symptoms such as runny nose, nasal congestion, cough, itchy eye and other symptoms of allergies
- Antioxidant and anti-cancer: Perilla’s antioxidant and anti-cancer effects have been shown in recent studies. Phenolic compounds derived from perilla help prevent cell decomposition and protect the body from the attack of free radicals.
