When a popular priest Father Flynn is suspected of, what the blurb delicately calls, inappropriate behaviour with a young black male student, it leaves Sister Aloysius with a very difficult decision to make. Should she pursue the matter with the ecclesiastical authorities in order to get the priest indicted and removed, or should she just shut up and try to forget all about it.

That is the dilemma at the core of John Patrick Shanley's brilliant and shocking play. Set in a school in New York's Bronx in the 1960s, Doubt has rattled chains wherever it has played.

Masquerade has been at the cutting-edge of drama in recent years. They shocked some people with their production last season of Edward Albee's play The Goat. But if you thought that was shocking, prepare to be positively traumatised by Doubt. Directed by Masquerade's main-man Tony Bezzina it is fleshed out by a stellar cast. Monica Attard will play Sister Aloysius, Malcolm Galea will be Father Flynn. Also in the cast are Faye Paris and English actress Evelyn Duah. Ms Duah will be making her debut in Malta (See interview page 10) and she comes to us fresh from a stint with the Royal Shakespeare Company.

The set has been designed by Harry Borg and Ernest Camilleri is responsible for costume design.

Doubt won the prestigious 2005 Tony Award for Best Play and also the Pulitzer Prize. Doubt is being put on in the theatre-in-the-round at St James and runs from October 12 to 14, then also the following weekend October 19 to 21.
