The second oldest church in Sofia, Hagia Sophia Church, actually dates back to 6th century. It was converted into a mosque during Ottoman dominion of 16th century. Following which it was converted into a warehouse. Eventually, it was refurbished to resemble its original structure.
This is why it is revered as one of the most important remainders of early Christian architecture. Popular folklore insists that the church had been protected from looting or plundering during wars or being destroyed by natural disasters due to miraculous powers of Saint Sophia. While this is certainly questionable, it is indeed amazing how Hagia Sophia Church has maintained its original architecture through the centuries.
The intricate and nuanced flora and fauna mosaics that cover the floor at Hagia Sophia Church are of special importance because they are reminiscent of the early days of Christianity. A lot has been written about the fact that there are tombs under and around the church. It is said that Hagia Sophia Church was located in the middle of ancient metropolis. Even today, visitors are left spellbound by this church because of its intriguing history along with intricate Byzantine architecture.
