They are one of the oldest dog breeds in existence today, almost 2000 years old. In Tibet, they were temple watchdogs that would alert the Tibetan Mastiff, who served as guard dogs.

The name Shih Tzu is derived from the Chinese term Shizigou. This means “lion sun dog”. This is because of the facial hair that grows out from its nose.

Like any purebreed, Shih Tzu is prone to health issues like Hypothyroidism, Intervertebral disk disease, respiratory problems, eye irritations, heat stroke, epilepsy, etc.

Once shown only for appearance, the breed is now often entered in sports competitions including Rally and Agility.

The oldest recorded Shih Tzu, Smokey from Florida, lived for 23 years, whereas their expected lifespan is 10 to 16 years.

Shi Tzu is among inborn stubborn breeds and it is very difficult to housebreak them. They tend to eat their own poop more than any other breed.

When Empress Tzu Hsi died in 1908, a proud owner of a Shih Tzu, who also helped advance their major breeding program, the breed declined during the 20th century.

Every Shih Tzu alive today can be traced to one of 14 dogs — seven males and seven females — that were used to rebuild the breed in the latter half of the 20th century.
