Double Blue Butterfly Pea – Clitoria ternatea

Description

Butterfly pea is a perennial herbaceous vine grown as a source of food, medicine and dye. It is also used as a fodder and cover crop. In certain settings it has been used as a nitrogen fixer to improve soil health.

This particular variety has double petals which make it a great ornamental and pollinator attracting candidate. It requires a trellis to grow on and performs best in full sun although it can grow well in partial shade, too.

Under certain environmental conditions Butterfly pea can be a short lived perennial. It is also likely to self seed soon after flowering starts if pods are left to dry on the plant.

To make herbal teas steep flowers in hot water. It is often mixed with lemongrass or lemon juice to make a refreshing drink. Young pods edible.
