Verbascum thapsus                                 Common name:  Mullein
Family: Scrophulariaceae

Parts used:  Aerial parts

Constituents:  Mucilage (leaves), Flavonoids [acubin], Saponins (leaves), Volatile oil (flowers), Tannins, Resins (flowers), Bitters.

Medicinal actions:  Demulcent, emollient, expectorant, vulnerary, mildly antispasmodic and relaxing.

Medicinal use: Verbascum is indicated in dry, hoarse coughs or wet, productive coughs with thick expectorate.

Pharmacy: Infusion 1-2 tsp/cup water, 1-2 cups TID. Tincture: (1:5, 25%), 4-6 ml TID. Fluid extract: (1:1, 25%), 2-4 ml TID.

Toxicity:  None known.
