Description The rhizome is thick, and the surface is brown, densely growing with many nodes, and many fibrous roots. The stems are purplish red, with 1-3 gray-white membranous sheaths at the base. The whorled leaves grow on the top of the stems, oblong, elliptical or obovate-lanceolate, the tip is short or acuminate, the base is round or broadly cuneate. The petiole is obvious, purplish red. The outer tepals are green, ovate-lanceolate, or lanceolate. The inner tepals are narrow, usually longer than the outer tepals. There are 8-12 stamens, the anthers are short, they are slightly longer than filaments. The ovary sub globose, edged, with a disc-shaped style base at the top, stubby style, branched. The capsule is purple. There are many seeds, they are bright red and have juicy outer seed coat. Flowering: April to July. Fruiting: August to November.
Distribution Growing in forests and thickets. Distributed in Henan, Shaanxi, Ningxia, Qinghai, Tibet, Yunnan, Guizhou, Sichuan, Hubei, Hunan, Guangxi, Guangdong, Fujian, and Taiwan. It is also distributed in Bhutan, Sikkim, Nepal, and Vietnam.
Part Used Medical part: rhizome. Chinese name: Chonglou.
Harvest & Processing Harvested in autumn. Removed fibrous root, well-washed, and dried.
Chemistry Pariphyllin, dioscin, pregna-5,16-dien-3β-ol-20-one 3-O-β-chacotrioside.
Pharmacology Relieving asthma, relieving cough, antibacterial.
Properties & Actions Bitter, little cold, mild-toxic.Clearing heat and removing toxin, detumescence and relieving pain, cooling liver and settling fright.
Indications & Usage Used for furunculosis, sore throat, snake and insect bites, pains from falls, convulsions.
Examples 1. Treat pulmonary tuberculosis, chronic cough, and asthma: Rhizome of Chinese Manyleaf Paris 5 qian. Add some water and cook with chicken or pork’s lung.
2. Treat snake bites: Rhizome of Chinese Manyleaf Paris 2 qian. Grind it and take it with water, 2-3 times a day. Also, grind the fresh Rhizome of Chinese Manyleaf Paris, or add some fermented rice soup when grinding the herb. Then, apply to the affected area.
