Wildflower series - Ursinia Nana

in #flowers6 years ago

This tiny little flower doesn't have a common name and it belongs to the sunflower family. Native to South Africa, it is a slightly succulent, drought resistant pioneer plant, meaning one that grows readily in disturbed soil and it is establishing itself as a pest in drier parts of the world such as Spain and Australia.

This plant has always been attractive to me because it makes rather unusual fruits that look like tiny little white flowers. They aren't classified as seeds because they have no shell and fall off the flower and are carried around by the wind. Once they land on the ground, ants collect the fruits and store them in their nests.

The little black spots on the flower are members of the ladybug family and one is probably hunting thrips and and the other two are procreating.

As you said, if you didn't know any better you would think that the same plant had two different flowers, incredible. I love the yellow, such a happy colour, makes sense that it's part of the sunflower family. You said we have them here in Australia, I will have to look out for them now.

hahaha me too. I don't recall seeing these odd fruits around. Better keep an eye out so we can have a closer look. Which part of Australia are you from @white.tiger? I'm from Melbourne.

I am from NSW, nice to meet another Australian.

Right back at you. Nice to finally meet another Aussie

There are quite a few Aussies here that I am aware of. Look for the teamaustralia tag

The flower on the first picture looks like a little sunflower to me :D I really believe it is from this family. Very nice images especially first image. So colorful and yellow and the bug make the compotion interesting :) Thank you.

I love the photos I have not seen this plant yet, saying that living on the coast It does look so similar to at least half a dozen natives. This particular flower looks identical It's just trying to work out between native and exotic, and I know that what is here is native. Its so hard to keep up with learning all the time about plants.
I have never seen a black lady beetle wow. My favorite shot might sound unusual is the dried flowers.
Like in a few of my articles we dont usually concentrate on the after the bloom.
This particular flower looks like paper that should be kept and preserved.20180222_091725.jpg

When the pedals are out and straight it looks similar, they are just a little broad on this native
