Gregory Colbert: The Poet With a Camera

in #art6 years ago

Some people argue that photography is not really an art discipline. For me the definition of art is very simple: it has to move people in one way or another and be able to generate emotions. Critics often handle the argument that photography is not handcrafted and that a mechanical device, being the camera does all the work. Well, I respectfully disagree. In my defense, I will set an example through the work of the Canadian photographer Gregory Colbert. The work of this director and photographer is simply poetry coming out of a camera.

His pictures are not simply lucky impressions captured on film they are so cleverly staged, that you simply can feel the whole process of realization from the simple idea to a perfect masterpiece that tell a thousand stories in one look.

Gregory Colbert is in my humble opinion definitely a lost poet, the way he constructed his pictures is an undeniable sign of extreme talent. To look at a picture of this photographer is receiving a blessing because it leaves the spectator with a wonderful feeling of wonder, happiness and most of all of the enchantment.

The man has traveled the globe in search of the right picture, the right mood, that serene moment when light and shadows form an unbreakable alliance. His series ‘Ashes and Snow’ is a tribute to the interaction between men and animals; it awakens a kind of hidden conscience, a sense of ‘je ne sais quoi’ that you cannot put your finger on.

His pictures are minimalistic in black and white but are so disarming that all you can inhale is the pure beauty of them. His tactic of ‘Less is more’ works as a charm. The pictures call upon inner feelings of the observers and are almost religious relics. The Zen atmosphere leaves nobody untouched, and that is an absolute characteristic of art.

For me, those pictures have a soothing and calming effect. I see those pictures as crystalized philosophy and poetry. The series of emotions that come to mind when you watch his pictures are extreme from awesomeness to respect and endearment. This man finds his force in the essence of art: the generation of pure emotions.

The interaction between humans and the animal kingdom is something magical and the pictures are witnesses of very exceptional moments who are so rare and pure that no word can describe it.

Gregory Colbert is for me the textbook proof that photography is absolutely a high form of art, to transfer emotions from the mind of the creator to the observers that are the ultimate purpose. Enjoy the pictures and let your minds wander into that secret place that is in your soul where your dreams live and prosper.
