🚆🌱 The future of CO2 transport lies on the rails!   The below VDZ study identifies how we can reduce and transport more than 6 million tons of CO2 emissions per year from the cement, lime and waste disposal industries by 2030 in the short term - and the answer is clear: by rail.   In two scenarios with very ambitious expansion plans for a new CO2 pipeline network in Germany, 45 million tons of CO2 per year must be transported from sources with barely avoidable CO2 emissions in the long term. In the KN2045 scenario, which envisages a comprehensive CO2 pipeline network in less than 10 years, at least 9 million tons of CO2 must be transported annually by rail from German locations by 2035 in order to meet the climate targets. Additionally, the study foresees a transit demand of up to 20 million tons of CO2 per year from Austria, Switzerland, and France. Not included in the figures is CO2 capture from other industrial sources such as glass production, steel mills, or refinery processes.   The study underscores once again that even under highly ambitious expansion plans for a CO2 pipeline infrastructure, CCUS will only work with multimodal transport solutions. Therfore cross-border rail transport must be incorporated into the national Carbon Management Strategy and the EU Commission's Industrial Carbon Management Strategy.   As a leading company in European asset leasing and rail freight logistics, we have been supporting our customers for decades in successfully transporting CO2 by rail. For the new CCUS market, we are developing CO2 tank cars and logistics solutions with our partners for large-volume CO2 transports from inland areas to future CO2 hubs. Additionally, we will also deploy tailor-made container solutions.   This ensures that our customers can implement their CCUS projects as early as 2026.   However, it is now imperative that policymakers and emitters fulfill their responsibilities and create frameworks for CO2 reduction via rail.   Together, we can set the course for a sustainable future.
