Leiva et al. (2010) wrote "las bayas maduras son consumidas como frutas por los pobladores rurales, las cuales son agradables y exquisitas." Nee (1986) reported "Las hojas tiernas se cuecen y se consumen como las espinacas; varios colectores reportan que los frutos también son comestibles." Nee recognized only J. procumbens growing in Veracruz, Mexico. I recognize at least two species in this state, J. procumbens and J. repandidentata.
