Most years this has been uncommon, I had most often seen it in recent burn scars until 2015 when it appeared all over the place (Perhaps it likes a torrential downpour in December, followed by drought).
Formerly these North American plants were classified as C. ciliata, but modern research indicates that our plants are genetically different, and they have been given their own species.
