Cephalophyllum aff. curtophyllum
The Ice Plant Family, Aizoaceae, is a large group with thousands of species, most of them found in southern Africa. They are notable for their highly succulent leaves and their brilliant many-petaled flowers. The genus Cephalophyllum contains species with cylindrical leaves and flowers of various colors, including the pinkish-purple hue seen here. Our plant was received as “aff. curtophyllum”, which means that it is similar to that species, and it may or may not belong there. In any case, it is a miniature delight, and a welcome burst of color in February and March (n its native South Africa, it would flower at the opposite time of year).
