Hicham El Guerrouj youngest ever Hall of Fame inductee

Hicham El Guerrouj Olympics 2004The Moroccan known as “King of the Mile” is set to become the youngest ever inductee into the to International Association of Athletics Federations Hall of Fame.

Hicham El Guerrouj, who holds world records in the 1,500m and the mile, is considered by many as the greatest middle distance runner of all time. He won both the 1,500m and 5,000m at the 2004 Olympic in Athens and on four occasions won the 1,500m at the world championships. He also won three world indoor titles — two in the 1,500m and one in the 3,000m.

El Guerrouj’s 1,500m and mile world records stand at 3:26:00 and 3:43.13. He only turned 40 in September of this year, the minimum age someone must be to be considered as an inductee.

He will be inducted alongside 11 other athletes from earlier eras at the IAAF World Athletics Gala in Monaco later this month.
