Watching these gems grow healthy and pesticides free in Qatar brings me such a joy! Indoor vertical farming has a charm of its own, i feel it attracts certain type of growers, maybe persons like me who spent their lives torn between their passion to physics and their passion to biology… #farming #qatar #verticalfarming #sustainability #feedtheworld

A couple of goals captivate me: 1- Grow locally in the desert of Qatar a salad with 50% less Carbon footprint than an imported one. 2- Ramp up production until a healthy locally grown salad sells cheaper than a junk food meal!

The high tech controlled environment agriculture philosophy is very clear: - Produce 10+ more than open field to reduce pressure on arable lands. - Consume 90% less water than open field and deploy the technology in water scarce countries. - Recycle nutrients to avoid runoff into water bodies - Reduce the use and negative impact of pesticides by containing the drift and relying more on natural enemies. - Establish farms in non arable lands to reduce deforestation. - Rely on solar/ clean energy to energise the farms. - Capture CO2 from industries and use it in the greenhouse to increase yield. - Use artificial intelligence, big data and machine learning to optimise the use of resources. - Explore the synergies in nature like biostimulants, biochar and beneficial microorganisims to safely boost the yield. Climate change and overexploitation of nature is the single most urgent threat to humanity, and COVID19 is just the tip of the iceburge of what disaters we will face if we don’t act immediately!

It’s Qatar the end of July 2021, and the tomatoes are in the peak of production in the high tech greenhouse. We transplanted the seedlings 1st of April and today we already acheived 15 kgs/m2. Summer production of fresh vegetables in desert countries doesn’t seem very far anymore! #agriculture #farming #qatar #agtech #hydroponics #controlledenvironmentagriculture
