Global description
Barbarea verna is an erect herb, slightly branched, glabrous or nearly , maximum 75 cm high. The leaves are divided into terminal lobe and lateral lobes. Those at the base are arranged in a rosette, whereas those along the stems are alternate. Flowers are small, bright yellow, and are assembled into a raceme that elongates at the time of fructification. The fruit is a curved linear silique, enclosing oval flattened seeds.
Cotyledons
The cotyledons are finely stalked, with elliptical blade, rounded at the top.
First leaves
The first two leaves , blades entire, are alternate but appear opposite due to their very close insertion.
General habit
Erect herbaceous plant, slightly branched, glabrous or nearly, reaching up to 75 cm high.
Underground system
The plant has a taproot system.
Leaf
The basal leaves, arranged in a rosette, are 5 to 20 cm long. They appear dissected into 6 to 10 pairs of lobes; lateral ones large, short, rounded, sinuate or not, terminal ones bigger, oval to sub-circular, slightly cordate at the base with sometimes, but rarely, small auriculate, spatulate basal lobes which seem petiolate. The stem leaves are alternate, simple, and also dissected into lobes. The lower stem leaves look dissected into 5 to 7 pairs of narrower lobes than those of the basal leaves. The upper leaves are sessile, dissected into narrow lobes and few in numbers.
Inflorescence
The flowers are assembled into narrow dense racemes which elongate at the time of fructification
Flower
The flowers, bright yellow in color, are small, with narrow obovate petals, 5 to 7 mm long.
Fruit
The fruit is a linear elongated or curved ascending silique, 3 to 7 cm long and 1.5 to 2 mm in diameter, with sturdy pedicel, 4 to 8 mm long.
Seed
The seed is oval, flattened, 2.5 mm long and 1.2 mm wide.
