Onobrychis aliacmonia was discovered by Rechinger and Goulimis in 1956 in the Aliakmon river valley, in a site subsequently inundated by an artificial lake. It was listed by the IUCN Threatened Plants Committee in 1982 as “believed extinct”, but was rediscovered in 1994 in large quantity on whitish marl at the shores of the dam (see Kit Tan & Iatrou in Ann. Naturhist. Mus. Wien 98B Suppl.: 305–309. 1996). A closely related species, O. peloponnesiaca, is a recently discovered local endemic of S Peloponnisos.A
