Hey, my Megalobulimus oblongus has laid two eggs. He had been fat for a few days and I thought he had overfed. Then it laid two eggs. Just two, but they are the size of large grapes!!!

Yep that's them, I haven't measured the eggs properly but they are about 27-30mm in size. Which is enormous. For a 80mm snail that is pretty amazing! As far as I can tell the eggs are plain white. I was surprised, they don't eat cuttlefish, I had been sprinkling it all over the tank in the hope they would eat some of it, they must have. It was bulging out of its shell horribly, I was worried it had eaten too much (weird when you consider they are the fussiest eaters I have). It's no wonder now. I did check for eggs but the breathing hole was so bloated I could hardly see inside it. I'd been withholding food yesterday but now they're back with loads of food to recover I've no information on these eggs, hatching times so fingers crossed. I had to move them, the snails would damage them, one was part buried, the other in a plastic plant pot. At the cold end of the tank. But I suspect this may be because I moved the snail earlier and it was too chubby or too far on to start digging. So now, the eggs are in their own tub. I managed to move them without touching them, I have them part buried and at least this way they won't dry out.

I had to remove the eggs and put them in a tub. One was laid in a plant pot where it would dry out, the other was half buried. But I moved the snails beforehand when I was worried it was ill, and I don't think it was able to move back again, being too far along. That's a shame, I'd like to have left them in the tank. Does anyone know was the gestation period is for Megalobulimus?
The bulging picture is actually my other snail about to lay! I think one egg may have already been buried. I'm gonna leave these wherever they lay them. Hopefully, that should mean a better chance of finding out the best way to hatch them.

i think usually the larger the egg the longer it takes to hatch. im guessing a few weeks?
where have you put the tub? i was wondering what a good temperature for eggs is.
kind regards

Well, I'd been heating the tank for a few days and they laid in the cold part. Even at room temperature, the substrate feels cold. I'm not sure what to do, its a lottery really, they may hatch with no extra effort and doing something could ruin it. But my room is warm, my dimidiata hatched in 9 days unheated.
Achatina (5mm eggs) seem to hatch in 5+ days Archachatina (15mm eggs) seem to hatch in 25+ days
so we could be in for a wait for a 30mm egg! But the upside is that if they do hatch the babies are far less likely to die, as larger babies are more robust, apparently.
I think the most important thing could be maintaining a constant temperature for even development. That shouldn't be a problem, it is my computers etc that heat my room so much and they are on 24/7.

haha judging by achatinid hatching times it would take 50 days. but this is a completely different family, so it's anyones guess. i had some 25mm margie eggs once, they're on my shelf if bulimulus has 30mm eggs, then megalobulimus must be even bigger! damn why did the brazilian dealer only have 1! kind regards mike

Thanks! So, similar to margies then. I don't suppose it mentioned a temperature or location? I read the other day that Megalobulimus oblongus has been spread accidentally to the Caribbean and they are becoming quite a problem. Now have a look at this species... images.google.co.uk/images?q=Megalobulimus+oblongusThey look very similar, what do you reckon? So far the Bulimulus snails I have seen seem quite different.
