From Petrograd to Berlin, from Berlin to Paris, from Paris to the maquis, the path followed by Jacob Gordin comes across as travel from East to West. Taking into account the differences between French intellectual trends and the Russian and German scientific landscape, Gordin’s influence on Jewish thinkers in France is part of a cultural collision. To arrive at a better assessment of what is at stake in this collision, this paper resorts to the notion of linguistic landscape so as to understand more precisely the challenges presented by communication and non-communication between Gordin and his French audience. Such sociolinguistics of knowledge enable us to perceive the specificity of a particular historical situation and the encounter between a Russian polyglot and Jewish thinker and monolingual French Israelites. However, the primacy of linguistics must not lead us to forget the importance of other factors, including the difference between epistemic standards concerning studies o...

As already pointed out by Giovanni Manetti in his Le teorie del segno nell’antichità classica/Theories of the Sign in Classical Antiquity (Milan, 1987/Bloomington-Indianapolis, 1993), there is a striking similitude between Saussure’s tripartite distinction between the signifier, the signified and the reference and the distinction Stoician philosophy made between the σημαίνον, the σημαινόμενον and the τυγχάνον. However, the basic difference between the two theories of the linguistic sign is connected with the fact that in Stoicism, this distinction is actually a quadripartite one inasmuch as it also involves the dimension of the λεκτόν, the logical proposition made out of a combination of σημαῖνα/σημαινόμενα in order to refer to the contingent world (τυγχάνα). I would like to reappraise the difference between the Stoician theory on the signifier and signified on the one hand and the specific twist Saussure added to this theory in his celebrated Cours de linguistique générale on the other hand. One of the directions I would like to investigate is the role of arbitrariness in Saussure’s theory. Whereas in Stoician logics, the dimension of arbitrariness mainly pertains to the τυγχάνον, i.e. the notion parallel to référent, Saussure integrated arbitrariness inside the couple signifiant/signifié.

This article aims at reconsidering the concept of lingua franca, focusing in on the limited field of Maghreb in the period from sixteenth century to the beginning of the Colonial Period. By analysing samples of set phrases taken from the Dictionnaire de la langue franque ou petit-mauresque, published in Marseille in the year of the conquest of Algiers by the French, it emerges not only that this vehicular contact language is the simplest common denominator between Italian and Spanish, the most spoken languages in the Maghreb before the French conquest, but also that no Arabic element is included in it. This proves that this language was more a contact language among Christians living in the Barbaric States than a vehicular language between Christians and Muslims. In conclusion, this article presents a reflection on further developments of Italian and Spanish in Maghreb, from the colonial period to decolonization and post-colonial era.

The most sensible way to apprehend Homerisms in Graecus Venetus would be to limits to the dimension of the signifier and to ask which features of the Homeric dialect could have been perceived as occasional equivalents of Aramaic. The Graecus Venetus is an almost fanciful translation that tries to answer the question what would have the Bible sound like had it be redacted by Thucydides or Demosthenes or by Homer and the Aeolian lyrics. The physical presence of Homerisms in the translation of the Aramaic part of Daniel does not reflect an attempt to project Christian categories onto the founding text of Greek civilisation. Western interest in the Hebrew truth of the Bible is a constant that started with Jerome and culminated in the Christian Hebraists of the Renaissance. Keywords:Bible; Daniel's Aramaic; Graecus Venetus; Hebrew; Homerisms

Staging linguistic contacts and cultural shock in Avi Nesher's Turn Left at the End of the World This article attempts to analyze the sociolinguistic issues at stake in the film Turn Left at the End of the World (2004) by the Israeli movie director Avi Nesher. The cultural shock of the interethnic relationship is felt most acutely on the linguistic level. As yet insufficiently familiar with Hebrew, the new immigrants of Jewish Indian background have trouble communicating with their Moroccan neighbors, who settled there ten years earlier and whose lack of knowledge of English is most remarkable. In itself, the choice of Moroccan and Indian identities to illustrate cultural shock is an ironic way to suggest that French and English enter into conflict through the intermediary of decolonized Jews that chance brought together at the margins of Israeli society. We try to discover what is at stake in the clever game played by Avi Nesher when replacing genuine ethnic idioms (Moroccan Ju...

Contrasting religious multiple identitities: efforts to mark orthodoxies and differences in complex societies

Panel proposal at Congress of European Society of History of Religions - Bern June 2018

Multiple religious identities can emerge in multiethnic and multicultural society and can be related with mixed behavior, syncretic worships, contaminations, new rituals, complex self conceptions, identity debates within religious groups.
At the same time different communities can evidence some efforts to contrast multiple identities, defining orthodoxies, orthopraxis, ortholiturgies.
The object of this panel is the resistance to contaminations and to mixed identities, analyzed in historical perspective. The main aim is to outline general identity, social and cultural dynamics. No chronological limits are predetermined.
Papers and discussion will be focused on:
Ethnical and cultural aspect of multiple religious identities;
Dynamic and changeable aspects of multiple religious identities;
Definitions of orthodoxy;
Codifying religious orthodoxy (and orthopraxis) in multicultural and multiethnic contexts;
Strategies of contrasting multiple religious identities and behaviors;
Resistances to multiple religious identities within religious groups;
Processes of strengthening religious “orthodox” identities related with the contrast to multiple identities;
Use of violence connected with the resistance to standardization efforts;
Educational activities;
Legal aspects and interventions,

Submissions are invited from scholars in all academic fields.
