Mass update on what’s been blooming over the past few months

Life keeps getting in the way of me posting regular updates and it resulted in having a long list of posts to write blocking me from posting anything new. Well, it happens, I’ll just post all bloom photos in one post and add maybe a couple more on semi hydro and other stuff that’s been happening with my orchids.

They’ve generally been doing well, I’ve been generally doing well by not adding any more to my collection (except for some raffle winnings and an occasional plant or two here and there). I’ve watered them all today, I usually split the watering in two: upstairs and downstairs, but I didn’t water any yesterday as I got tired from a Spring repotting session. They all look good, some better than others, there’s some flowers, some spikes and some new growths. I’m happy with how they’re getting on.

In flower: Oncidium NoID

This guy from Oncidium alliance (no ID) has spiked just after finishing blooming last year and bloomed earlier this year. It’s just losing the flowers now, it might have something to do to with a trip to my orchid society last week, the weather was a bit chilly. However being the only plant on the beginners table it got unanimous votes. The trophy for the best plants here I come!

Autumn

It’s time to check in on semi-hydro.

Phalaenopsis Legolas has been in SH for about two months now. It has no visible root loss, it’s grown new roots and seems to be perfectly happy and hasn’t had any transition setback whatsoever. Not what I expected with a Phal, but I’ll take all the good news I can.

Dendrobium lawesii continued to lose leaves at first (it’s been shedding leaves before I put it into SH), but it hasn’t lost any recently and it’s got a few new tiny roots. I think the old roots have at least partially rotted. It didn’t have a lot of roots to begin with so I suppose it’s doing okay. Also seems to be growing new pseudobulbs.

The next two I repotted as the medium was quite degraded and I felt I need to repot them anyway. Why not into semi-hydro then? These were Dendrobium Green Elf and Prosthechea Edith Arakawa. Both had been in semi-hydro about month and a half and both had good root system. I didn’t want to disturb them so far, they seem fine though I expect some root rot. So maybe in another month I’ll go back and cut off dead roots.

At the same time I also potted up two keikis, Den Firebird and Den Berry Oda. I think I might have buried them too deeply and some of the roots rotted next to the stem. Since then I propped them up and both are growing new roots.

Another one that I repotted and my biggest regret probably is my Den Polar Fire. It has been doing so well. And I forgot I repotted it recently into fresh bark, which made the transition more difficult for it. When I was cleaning the roots the plant split into two perfect divisions, both with 3 pseudobulbs each and 1 new growth. Sadly shortly after transition to semi-hydro one of the divisions rotted the new growth. I cut it off and the rot doesn’t seem to be spreading. Both lost a leaf or two, but nothing major and I’m hopeful they’ll pull through it.

The third wave of semi hydro transitions was forced on me by one of my shelves giving way and the plants on it ending up on the floor. The damage? A few broken leaves and of course the medium all over the floor. This event kind of makes me worry that if I had plants in semi hydro setup up there the mess and possibly the damage would’ve been far worse with the water on all things beneath the shelf… I’ll trust that the new setup is more secure.

The victims of the accident were Zygopetalum, Oncidium, 2 Pleurothallis keikis and a Cattleya seedling. The 2 keikis seem perfectly happy so far. Cattleya has its only root rotten rotten, but it doesn’t shows signs of dehydration yet. Oncidium and Zygo are the ones with broken leaves. It’s too early to tell how they’re doing. Oncidium is dehydrated so I suspect the roots have died, but it was in active growth so I’m hoping the new pseudobulb will push out new roots soon.

Overall is not as bad as I’m sometimes convinced of. Actually, given my lack of experience and the big transition that SH is for most orchids, I think they’re doing pretty well.

In other news my Aliceara is in bloom.

And some more photos of my Oncidium

And I managed to get some nicer photos of my two work Dens. Both are super happy, still blooming and growing more flower spikes.

I complained recently that my Paphiopedilum wasn’t doing anything. It turns out it was growing a flower spike. Yet to open it, but it’s getting bigger every day!

Another surprise, I didn’t expect buds so soon not to mention the lack of winter rest, this guy doesn’t seem to mind at all.

More SH

My plan was to wait for four months to see how the two plants I transferred into semi-hydro fare. A few of my plants are in need of repotting though (old medium) and they’ve got new growths so it would be a perfect opportunity to convert them into SH. But do I want to risk it? I’m itching to transfer my whole collection (or most of it) into semi-hydro. So clean. So quick to water. I suppose it won’t hurt too much if a few more will join the experiment. For most I’d have to wait anyway for some new growths (will that Paphiopedilum ever start to grow anything?!). For now I’ve had two more keikis to pot up and they went into semi hydro. Dendrobium Berry Oda and Dendrobium Firebird (yup more of that one and still more on the mother plant).

My Oncidium NoID opened up:

Miltonia Sunset with all 5 blooms open:

And my Phal I got from work:

New growths, new buds, new adventures

No flower photos, keiki and bud photos instead 😊

Pleurothallis restrepioides keikis are doing great so far (I potted two together as they’re tiny anyway). Both seem to be growing new leaves!

Hard to tell whether Dendrobium Firebird keikis are doing okay, but they’re not shrivelling up so I take it as a good sign. I’ve got at least 3 more still attached to the parent plant, I’m waiting for the roots to grow a little bit longer before I pot them on their own.

And the promised buds on my NoID Oncidium. Can’t wait for it to finally open!

P.S. Tonight’s the night! I’m going to repot one of my orchids into semi-hydro. Thanks go to Monika for the encouragement to try this out. I’m excited! A post to follow soon 😄

Edit: actually some flower photos. Got this orchid (or rather orchids as I was sent two instead of one) for work. It’s Dendrobium Thailand Black. I think now I want to collect all the different varieties of the Dendrobium Sa-nook orchids 😊

Spring

Finally a beautiful sunny day. It’s Spring! I went to the garden centre with my mum-in-law and got two new orchids. Both NoIDs. Oncidium alliance? And some Miltoniopsis perhaps?

On the way back had to quickly get something from the shop. And what was there as I entered? Beautiful Dendrobium nobile and I couldn’t believe my eyes. Also couldn’t pass up that opportunity.

Just in

What can I be doing on a windless Sunday morning? A perfect day to get more orchids!

Husband asked in a somehow worried voice how many I’m planning to get if I need him to help me carry them 😉

Not many! Just 3: Oncidium, Dendrobium nobile and another Cymbidium orchid which should have white flowers. So happy and yet I can’t wait to get more!
