Henry's Stewartia. This species of Stewartia is a hybrid between S. monadelpha and S. pseudocamellia. It was shared with me by Ozzie Johnson of Marietta, GA, and Ozzie's plant was growing upwards of 3' a year after he prunes it back. As it becomes more mature, of course it will not keep this up. The flowers are about halfway between the two parents in size, 2" or so in diameter flowering here in zone 8 in May-June. It is a good dependable bloomer and does well here in the Deep South. It even roots quite easily. I am anxious to see as the plant matures, probably a small tree in the 20' plus range, whether it manifests the outstanding bark characteristics of S. pseudocamellia. It performs best for us in morning sun and afternoons shade or filtered sun with a well drained soil with adequate moisture, but I am sure that one could plant it in full sun further north.
