What is Terminalia chebula?

Terminalia chebula, also commonly known as Black or Chebulic Myrobalan, is a deciduous tree with a long history of use in Ayurvedic medicine (the ancient Indian medical system).  

The tree is native to India and South East Asia, and it’s known for its medicinal propreties , mainly coming from its dried fruit. In fact, it’s so powerful that it’s been referred to as the ‘King of Medicine’ in Tibet. This is thanks to its many wonderful uses and benefits. 

How does Terminalia chebula work?

Terminalia chebula has been used for centuries for kidney and liver dysfunctions and as a diuretic and mild laxative. Terminalia chebula is also commonly known for improving joint health and promoting mobility. This is due to its analgesic, anti-oxidative  and anti-inflammatory effects which work together to reduce joint pain.   

There are many studies on humans and pets which highlight the effectiveness of this wonderful plant. 

A 2016 study found the plant to reduce inflammation in dogs suffering from osteoarthritis. Here, it was found that Terminalia chebula was able to reduce arthritic pain by providing an anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effect.

Another study found that Terminalia chebula was able to reduce discomfort for patients suffering with joint pain. 

But how?

Terminalia chebula contains many active constituents, with chebulagic and chebulinic acids being 2 of the main ones. These components have been shown to exert antioxidants, anti-inflammatory and analgesic activities which in turn provide its antiarthritic propreties.

Terminalia chebula is used for a range of different diseases and ailments.
