In a box of personal treasures in my house, alongside a billion-years-old nugget of meteorite and a small shark’s tooth, sits a simple heart made of acrylic glass. It was created in 1945 as an act of love, but it exists only because of an act of violence. The story behind it involves my grandfather, my mother…
